War of Wagons: Porsche Panamera Turismo v. Mercedes-AMG E63 S

These wagons are similar on paper, but which really takes the cake?

Porsche and Mercedes have been battling each other for a long time in the automotive war. Although both brands may share the same German origin, their ideologies are quite different. One thing they do have in common however is the love for long names. We present to you the Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+ Wagon and the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hyrbid Sport Turismo. Wow, those are ridiculously long names, especially the Porsche.

Another thing these two brands share in common is that they both offer some of the finest luxury wagons on the market today. We must start by mentioning both of these vehicles cost wildly different prices. The Mercedes is priced out to cost just around $110,000. The Porsche is almost double at around $190,000. That’s an awful lot of money for a family sports luxury vehicle, so we need to see which is really worth the money. Bang for buck, per say. On paper, both vehicles have similar performance qualities. How will that translate in real time? Thanks to Carwow on YouTube, we get to find out.

Let’s talk about some obvious differences between both cars. 603 HP for the E63 and 677 HP for the Panamera while sharing the same torque figures. The Panamera uses the assistance of a hybrid system for power. This is in addition to the twin-turbo V8. Both cars have automatic transmissions and AWD capability. The drag race between the two will come down to weight and traction off the line. To no surprise, the Porsche with the extra 70 ponies just barely edges out the Mercedes. Although, the Mercedes definitely sounds better. The final time for the Porsche was 11.1 seconds for the standing 1/4 mile. The Mercedes was barely off pace at 11.3 seconds.

However, the narrative of the story changed during the rolling race. At a 50 mph start, the Mercedes managed to beat the Porsche by a couple car lengths. Surprisingly, even though the Porsche has hybrid assistance, it wasn’t as quick to respond as the AMG. The results were also the same for the braking test. The Porsche being extremely heavy, struggles to do an emergency stop from 60 mph. The AMG manages to stop almost a full car length ahead of the bigger, beefier Porsche.

Who is the winner then? Well, from a price point perspective the Mercedes is definitely the obvious choice. It performs well above its class. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below.
