What Will it Take to Get the 2020 Supra to 1,000 Horsepower?

By -

A $100,000+ investment plus months of development is only the start for trying to make over 700 additional horsepower.

The story of the 2020 fifth-generation Supra is somewhat never ending. Because of the amount of hype behind the car, it seems like yet another person is doing another crazy thing to them on a daily basis. Let’s recall what we have focused on over the past couple of months: We know that from the factory, the Supra managed to make well over its advertised horsepower level at 339 WHP stock. Also, we saw a breakdown of the B58 engine powering the Supra, learning how it works on a mechanical level. Then, we saw that the Supra was capable of making 600 HP stock with the help of a new turbo, methanol injection, and downpipes.

However, as you may imagine, there is a big difference between making 1000 HP and 600 HP. So, assuming that there will be limitation of either fueling, air flow, or both, components will need to be swapped out. Then, internals for the engine will most likely also have to be changed out to support the increased pressure, targeting the weaker components first. Thanks to Papadakis Racing on YouTube, we get to see exactly what it’s going to take to get the B58 up to world-class levels.

The first component to get upgraded is the fueling. The stock fueling system supports good power, but not enough for 1000 HP. So, the team added 6 2000cc fuel injections via port injection, in addition to the stock direct injection system. Then the next to go is the intake manifold, which holds the air-to-water intercooler. The manifold is good, but has its limitations at this power level so they need a new design to ensure there will be no issues with intake. This also means means the complex air-to-water system will be lost and will require the team to run a standard intercooler setup.

As you might imagine the stock turbo can’t keep up at 1000 HP, so the team is swapping it out for a Borg-Warner EFR 9280 turbocharger. In order for this turbo to work, a new custom turbo manifold is also required. Its crazy how much custom work has gone into this project and we haven’t even gotten to the internals yet. If more details about what it takes to get this engine to that crazy power figure interests you, such as the rods, pistons, and head porting, we suggest you watch the video in full.
