Citroën Race Comes to a Dramatic End in a Single Corner

The rain in Denmark is obviously different. This spectacular crash left 11 of the 16 Citroën on the grid in the barriers.

The beauty of racing is that everything can change in any given moment. The weather can go from bright and beautiful to bleak and dreary in a matter of minutes. It is this dynamic relationship between the cars and the environment they are racing on that makes for exciting driving. However, for the same reason, the very environment can catch you off-guard.

As with most racing series, the Citroën DS3 Cup requires for the use of slick tires for dry weather racing. If there is one thing that slicks don’t mix well with, it’s rain or wet environments. Even the slowest of speeds can lead to complete lack of control for the drivers due to the effects of hydroplaning. Driver skill or experience won’t save you if you literally are a passenger in your vehicle. When the weather abruptly changed at Jyallands-Ringen in Denmark, no one would believe what happened next. Thanks to MotorsportCrashes on YouTube, we get to see this ridiculous series of crashes unfold.

To understand what may have caused this crash, its important to first understand the factors surrounding it. You might ask yourself, why would they let these cars out on slicks if it was raining? Well, the point of the matter is that it’s most likely that the downpour was sudden and unexpected, thus, these cars were rushing to get back to the pits to change tires. Obviously, that in itself is a risky game. How exactly the occurrence came to be we aren’t exactly sure.

The assumption is that the rain suddenly kicked up heavily and in this area of the track there was more than a little standing water, most likely after a high speed section. This sent the three leading Citroën into the wall after hydroplaning off the track, past the mud traps and into the wall. The middle of the field unknowingly then experienced part two of this drama. This time eight more cars flew into the three already parked at the barriers. Obviously, this event without a doubt signified the end of the race. Thankfully, there was no serious injuries of any kind to any of the drivers. It will however, definitely be a story they tell their kids.
