hydraulic tappet strong noise

When starting my boxster 981 s with 10000 km on the clock , after about
2 months without use , I had a very strong tac tac tac ...from the left side of the engine , for about 10 minutes.
I can understand that after such a long time the hydraulic tappet has to reinitiate , but then why on only one tappet and not all of them .Is it a sing that I might have some problems with that tappet later ? when the warranty will be over ...
Thanks for your help.

If you don't hear the noise after a much shorter period of inactivity, my WAG is there is one lifter that takes longer to pump up, for some air that gets in the lifter to work its way out.

It might be a lifter that is furtherest away from the oil pump.

If you continue to let the engine sit 2 months unused this could take its toll on that lifter.

But the long period of inactivity takes it toll on the entire engine (and car).

Leaving the car idle, the engine unused 2 months at a time is not real healthy for an engine. They are designed to run. Porsche (all automakers) go to great lengths to produce engines that run and run and run.

They are not really designed to sit long periods with no use. They tolerate it ok, but it is not best for the engines.

Seals dry out shrink because the oil is not seal friendly. There are additives in the oil to compensate for this. But the oil must circulate to help keep the seals from shrinking. Once a seal shrinks it won't return to it prior size/shape and it will probably leak.

Everywhere the oil lays after a while the oil stratifies. Primarly contaminates separate into layers. There will be unburned fuel which floats toward the surface of the oil. Then comes the oil. Down at the bottom will be any moisture/water. This water will have combined with other combustion byproducts to form acids.

Corrosion in some areas doesn't really matter. I mean there is no risk the oil sump will rot away.

But this oil and the corrosives it contains attack every surface that it comes in contact with. Some of these surfaces are for instance the very precisely finished and sized lifter surfaces. This could over time lead to one or more lifters that are unable to hold the very high pressure that they must hold to do their job. A constantly ticking lifter could be the result.

Or a spot of corrosion forms on a valve spring. Valve springs are very highly stressed. But they are designed with this in mind. However, a spot of corrosion can lead to a fractured spring.

A spot of rust on a rod can lead to a rod failing.

Or a spot of rust forming on a cam chain link plate can lead to a chain breaking.

Really while it is your car and you can of course let it sit as idle for as long as you please, you really do the car no good by leaving it sit unused for long periods of time.

Another thing to consider is the longer the car sits the more oil that over time makes its way out the bearing areas. This means that upon engine start the amount of residual oil that lubes and protects bearing surfaces from metal to metal contact is reduced. It could be enough that upon engine start metal to metal contact an wear could occur.

When used more often sufficient oil remains that there is no real wear.

As an example of this I offer up my 2002 Boxster engine which now has over 293110 miles and has been started uncounted times. Yet the engine sounds just fine and runs just fine and has apparently suffered not any start up wear. This is a good sign that given frequent use there is sufficient residual oil that no wear takes place.

I can't believe one has to be urged to use his Porsche more but I do urge you to use your Porsche more often. Try to avoid letting it sit unused for 2 months.

Can't be any hotter there where you are than where I am. It gets up to over 100F here once in a while and I drive my Boxster regardless of the temperature. I've had it in 116F ambient temperature out in the deserts of the southwest of the US of A. The car is fine in hot weather. Nothing melts. The engine doesn't overheat. 'course one might not want to put the top down in extreme hot weather lest the driver and passenger suffer heatstroke in that heat.

I have two cars. My Boxster and my 996 Turbo. I manage to give them both some use, regular use. The Boxster is my work commute car (work commute is 60 miles round trip) and gets the call most days while I use the Turbo one weekday -- like today as a matter of fact -- to drive to/from work and again on a Saturday or Sunday.
