Got my first SC (pics)

Well, I'm amused and love my new porsche's but I decided to start working backwards. I picked up a 993 and love it but really wanted an older 911SC. I found this one on ebay (which i'm hesitant to use for porsche's). However, for having 179k miles, its an amazing car. No dents, interior has recently been done, and it has good compression and runs like a champ. The previous owner lowered it to euro spec, and put a 930 steering wheel, shift boot and a few other things. Enjoy and let me know your thoughts on these, or if there is anything to watch out for!

That is a great looking SC. I love the sport seats and the sport stearing wheel. I had those seats in one of my 944s and loved them. Everytime I see a clean SC like yours, I want to run out and buy one.

Congrats!!!

Welcome to the SC club, looks good. Routine maintenance is the most important thing to do. I'd change the oil and check rocker clearances first, it never hurts. SC motors can last well over 200k miles if properly maintained. There are a few books about the SC, buy one and start reading.

Gorgeous car, the exterior seems to be in mint condition. Beautiful house as well.

Nice car....clean and she's been well maintained from what I can see. Keep the oil changed and the valves adjusted and it will run for you for a long time....

Thanks for all the compliments - and the house is about 25 years newer haha. There are some small scratches here and there when you get up close but overall I'm happy with it. The engine is so smooth compared to my 993's... its either because its well broken in or just a different engine. Something great about driving these things! The mechanic says there are some crankshaft leaks (and small valve cover leaks). I find 3 little tiny tiny tiny puddles of oil after driving it so not sure if I should just enjoy it or go spend the $5k quoted to make it right (they said they would want to rebuild the top end while they are ripping all that out yet the compression tested 175-180 across all cyclinders). I'm a perfectionist but also realize if I can deal with a few spots and adding a quart of oil between changes, it could be fine like this for another 5-10 years. Any thoughts?

I've owned my 911 for 22 years and have never had to add a quart of oil between oil changes. I do get a few drops of oil from time to time on the garage floor from small leaks in the valve covers, but they seem to seal themselves before long and go away. I get my valves adjusted every 15K miles and when that happens, new gaskets are installed when the valve covers are replaced. I'd just monitor the situation for a while before I would spend $5K as suggested by your mechanic. Pipes.

You bought the best bang for the buck in the "real" 911 arena. PM me if you want to discuss the engine rebuild.

good choice, great looking car.

I sold my '79 with 326k last year. There used to be many pictures posted on the old 6speed forum. Really enjoyed the car for many years. Engine was refitted at 160k with cylinders, jackets, all the usual. the oil cooler may have a chronic weeping, nothing to worry about. the sc's generally run wet, so dont expect a perfect garage floor. check the valve that opens the cooling lines running to the front end cooler, be sure the oil lines are hot running to the front of the car. put in a pop-off valve tomorrow.... and be sure you have the carrera chain tensioners installed. I think this is an sc with carrera headlight conversion so that's likely already been taken care off. think about stainless steel heat exchangers. and, oh yes, a Valentine One.

enjoy

BTW as for the minor oil drips, nothing a small piece of sheet rock cut up nicely to do the work.

Congrats!!! I love that car! the color, not first choice, for that model, I'd prefer either yellow or white. I have a silver 84 Targa with the Whale tail. CONGRATS again!
