I have an '87 Coupé. These are special cars - more so the ones with the G50 imho - and, in my case, a keeper.

The G50 was introduced in 1987. And yes, they are better.

Until the new hydraulic clutch needs replacement. And the clutch throw-out bearing needs replacement. That is $3000 unless you are a very good Porsche mechanic.

"Better" is subjective on a 911. It always means "more expensive".

Otherwise, a used 996 would not be selling for the price of an early longhood 911.

I was referring to the fact that the G50 cars are better because of my own 1987 model, which has it as it is, in fact, the first year in which they were so equipped; that this was the first year of the G50 is something any air cooled 911 enthusiast knows. I previously owned a 1984 with the 915 transmission which I bought used when I was 24.

I bought this 87 as a companion to my 2006 Carrera S in 2007 with 68k miles. As soon as I had it delivered home, I put in a new clutch and other parts in order to have a fresh start with my new-to-me older 911. I paid $1822 plus tax for the clutch work, including throw-out bearing at my local independent, who is well known in my area; this was well below the $3000 you posted. Maybe the rates in your area are considerably higher but this is what I paid here. Now my car has 111,800 miles and the clutch is still perfect and I have DE'd this car about 5 times - three at Roebling Road and 2 at Sebring - on this clutch and it seems to be good for a long time. Now, even if it were to need replacement next week, it has had 44k miles of perfect service and it would be well worth it for the benefits it brings me as compared to the older setup.

I've had both types of 3.2 Carreras and the G50 is heavier in a way that one can feel. Nevertheless, the small increase from 207 hp to 217 hp on the G50 cars makes up for the heavier weight, at least in straight line speed, as I've been able to compare both side by side. In handling I prefer the lighter weight of a 915 but this is more than compensated, specially at the track, by the smoothness, speed and ease of gear selection on the G50. So, for me there is one choice which is the one I have. Maybe on earlier cars the 915 matches their character better but not in the Carreras, IMO.

I'm sure many will agree as well as disagree with what I've written. That's the beauty of having both types of car available - one can buy whichever one likes more as this, like many things in life, vary according to our own point of view. I guess, in the end, it's not a competition about which is best then, but a preference.

OK, just don't block an early Carrera when it finds your bumper on the track.

Do you have any pictures of that wicked '87 car? It has a rollbar, a harness, and race brakes?

If I saw an early Carrera's bumper behind me on my '87, it could be due to a multitude of factors that may not have anything to do with the transmission type. My car is lightly modified for better performance overall but mostly street biased - definitely not a track only car. My engine is completely stock too.

Do you have any pictures of that wicked '87 car? It has a rollbar, a harness, and race brakes?
Why do you ask if my '87 has a rollbar, harness and race brakes? I don't have them as they are not needed for my car's intended use. I failed to notice any of those three on your car pics, though. Can you clarify what you are referring to as "race brakes"? I know of someone that races his 3.2 Carrera and has stock calipers on his car, as changing them is not allowed by the rules in the class and/or organization in which he races; this makes the stock calipers, in effect, race brakes, at least in his case.

My car does have factory sports seats, factory limited slip diff, camber truss, Weltmeister through the body sway bar up front and Weltmeister sway bar in the rear, upgraded torsion bars all around, Sports shocks, Zimmerman Xdrilled rotors, ATE Blue fluid, stainless steel braded lines (my car's brakes have never faded or failed me so I haven't had the need for cooling scoops yet). My motor is stock with no performance chip and with stock air filter on stock housing though I have Fabspeed Maxflo exhaust and a pre-muffler (for track as I have a cat for the street). For wheels I have factory 930 Fuchs in the rear and moved my factory rear Fuchs to the front so I have the same tire footprint as a late model 930. I don't put slicks on my car; only street tires so far (one of the multitude of factors why I may some day see an early Carrera's rear bumper behind me in the scenario you pictured). BTW, as my car is now, I've kept a 993 Turbo behind in the turns at Roebling and I've had full 914 race cars pass me by also... many things are relative and dependent on various factors.

Some pics of my car. To me it is "wicked" enough as it is still perfectly suitable for the double duty (track/dd) I need from it. Hope you guys like it!
