New to 911 - Oil fill question
Hi,
I pulled a rookie mistake this morning and checked the oil before a run up to the local lake for breakfast. Car was cold, oil was low (below low mark on dipstick) and I added two quarts. No blowing smoke or anything obvious on the drive. Did some reading when I got home and realized you check the oil with the car running hot, so the thermostat is open. Oil is now just below the high mark idling and the car has been run a fair amount today so I'm 95% sure the thermostat is open. Car purrs like a kitten. Any concerns? Should I siphon a quart out? Any idea what the range of those two marks is in terms of quarts? Any info would be appreciated. Thx

It's never good to overfill the oil as it increases crankcase pressure which can blow seals. Generally the crankcase is vented to the air box, but I don't know in this case. I'd remove some oil if me. Easy to do with a flexible hose like from a fish tank.
I appreciate the info. So one question I have is how does a sump tank increase crankcase pressure? There is negative pressure at idle so I'm struggling to understand the concept. Thx in advance. Todd
