Exclamation HELP! Lost All Forward Position Gears

Hi, hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. Recently bought a '99 Carrera and its been great other than having to replace a failed variocam solenoid 2 weeks ago. Yesterday Im driving out in the country, giving it a healthy workout (not terribly aggressive but spirited) and going from 2nd to 3rd gear I hear a grind and pop, then 3rd gear is gone. I pull over and assess the situation: The shifter does engage 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear but not reverse, 1st, 3rd, or 5th. So ive lost all forward position gears at that point but can drive the car just fine in the bottom position gears all the way home (about 35 miles). No noises, just cant engage those gears and shifter wont snap into place in those gears. I read a post on here where a guy had seemingly the same issue as me. For him it was a simple plastic part that held the shifter to the linkage in place had popped out. So i removed my center console to look at the linkage. Everything is fine in there, nothing broken or out of place. Now I test all the gears again and if I hold the shifter all the way up, i can get 3rd and 5th gear now, but 1st and reverse are still totally gone. I'm thinking something popped off the linkage back at the tranny. If anyone knows what this might be and how much $ im looking at, Id really appreciate the help. Thanks.
