Angry 93' 968 cab vs 83' 911S Targa

Folks

Recently bought a Cayenne Turbo and has since caught the Porsche bug (can't imagine driving any other car from now on!).

Am keen to step up my Porsche experience and wanted to go back to some old classics (another way to say that I can't effort the latest brand new 997 - car price in Singapore is exorbitant). Have little or no knowledge on these 2 cars. What's your thought ? Given I am considered a novice to the Porsche world, ease of maintenance is key:

Hope the link works.

Cheers

You should never mention a 968 in the same sentence as a 911.

Buy a 911, 968 is a piece of ****

Even when the 911 is 10 years older than the 968 ?

Also interested to know why the 968 is a piece of ****.

Christian,

You must not know too much about Porsche's if you make such a blatant flame. The 968 is considered by many to be amongst the very best front engine/rear drive handling cars of all time, and with a few cheap mods is an alltime favorite track car.

And Porsche themselves had to edit the Turbo version otherwise it would have blown away the 911 of the time. Perhaps you're confusing the 968 with the earlier front waterpumpers? The 968 was built at Stuttgart, alongside the 911's.

that 968 shows very well except its a convertible which may not be great for SG. it's a tip which can be a plus where you live.

the 911 is a bit dated and has a weird look to it. interior looks very nicely restored though.

tough call. i wonder if you can find a newer 964 instead.

I owned a 93' 968 and it was a POS. The build quality was mediocre, the 4 cyclinder was extememly weak and not mod friendly at all. Everything on the car had issues. I would take a 928 anyday over a 968

I guess you chose a poor example to purchase. The build quality is equal to the 911's built alongside at Stuttgart-the same Exclusiv option list was available for 968's as 911's as well. Just doing the Dave G airbox mod (cutting a few holes) gives close to 10hp, and add a chip and you're very close to contemporary 964 hp levels. There aren't a lot of inexpensive choices above that, but that was true with 964 and 993 model engine mods as well.

i tend to agree that the build quality is less than optimal - i am constantly finding things that could have been done a lot better

however, exactly because of that, i still love the car - it has been everything but unfriendly to mods - i have had a blast doing many of them - that is the entire reason i bought the car to begin with - i wanted a front engine rear drive 2 seat manual trans ragtop with ac - i took one look at the 968 and said "now that's a car i can tear apart and have some fun with" - it was a good platform for me

over the last 5 years, after purchasing a concours winner and tearing it completely down, i have spent about $40k in mods and have finally gotten something i love to drive

among the easy mods is certainly the above mentioned airbox mod that dave g and i worked out (good for 10.8hp) - there is finally a good chip out now that adds more - the same company commissioned the development of a header, thoroughly tested it, and now markets it, that adds even more - a few other tricks and you can have about 275hp at peak pretty easily, with a much improved mid section (over 50hp increase)

there is bracing now available for the cab that resolves almost all of the flex, making the chassis incredibly stiff

it's also pretty easy to get over a G cornering and drop over 200 lbs from the car - this suddenly transforms the car into something very competitive

so, while i don't pretend to think that the 968 is the best car ever built, it isn't a pile of junk either

Honest disclosure is needed here-the previous poster, while talking up products and a vendor-should identify that he 'develops' some of the product and acts as a subvendor-so you can take everything with a grain of salt. Caveat emptor.

so what?

i am not promoting any particular product or vendor here, and will not mention them by name, unless to refute or correct something somebody incorrectly posts - i am not interested in upsetting any sponsors or unfairly promoting anything without paying for the privilege - notice that i do not even mention the products in my signature

the fact that i design and develop products for the 968 in no way takes away from the comments i made above

the fact that i am a co-owner of another website, specifically focused on the 968, in no way takes away from those comments either - nor is it relevant - nor will i discuss that in any detail here either

the fact that i also write for a porsche magazine in no way takes away from the comments, and is also in no way relevant

let's try to stay on topic

'there is bracing now available for the cab (that I 'designed' and sell) that resolves almost all of the flex (and I've measured this how), making the chassis incredibly stiff (and it's been tested how). Funny how you left this important information out.

The above poster has also been banned from Rennlist and the UK 968 board for promoting his and his resellers products without identifying his involvement, just to let you all know. Similar history goes back to 968.net, where he shilled 9Magazine constantly-without telling the board readers that was working for the magazine until forced to do so.

sigh - why must you always make these personal attacks in public? take this outside

but to answer, i didn't leave anything out - it was not pertinent - i am not the only one who makes such products, so i saw no point in being specific in reference, and wanted to avoid any direct reference to anything i make, as i again did not want to take advantage of anything i was not paying for

i was banned from rennlist and UK purely because of the letters and notes you wrote (i have copies) - i never promoted anything i designed or make on either of those sites - in fact, just as here, i specifically avoided that - but, thank you for the obvious efforts - you continue to by default do more to send people to investigate and discover my stuff by these attacks than any advertising i could pay for

i choose to do nothing about the bans on those sites because there is no significant traffic there - unlike you, i choose not to hide behind anonymity on other sites, pilfer material, and then use it to start fights elsewhere

nobody forced me to do anything - i never hid that i wrote for the magazine - my title changed and i didn't announce it - that was all - by the way, it has changed 3 other times too - big deal - i have no responsibility to announce it - it was stated in the magazine, and if you had read it, you would have seen that for yourself

but again, thank you for the free publicity - i'm sure the sponsors here love to see you again starting up such nonsense

You give me far too much credit and power, I'm quite flattered; I don't think that Rennlist or 968.uk.com would ban anyone without careful consideration-obviously there were ethical and moral issues that ended up with you being banned. And even when you try and have surrogates proffer your agenda-boom, they're on warning too. Hilarious as usual.

And if you don't bother with Rennlist because of light traffic, what are you doing here? There's much less here than on Rennlist. Oh, because you'll post incessantly anywhere and everywhere where you're not banned. That leaves here and Pelican.

let it go and take this off site - it does NOT belong here

there was no moral or ethical issue at all, and you certainly have no room to point that finger - perhaps i should post your letters and notes and pms

i have spoken to both site owners, and they both said it was purely because of you and your cohort - they chose merely to stop it all by the means they did - i am not fighting it - it's not worth it - but, i certainly could, and with strong legal grounds

yes, even with all that, i have still chosen not to ban you on our site

lol - i have nobody doing anything on my behalf - that's ludicrous - in fact, i have specifically asked many people not to do anything, who have much stronger intentions - but in the end, they decide to whatever they do on their own, and for their own reasons - i have no need for any such intervention

as for being here, i will always be everywhere there is anything 968 going on - get used to it

Followed by five paragraphs! Classic!

Also classic is the threat of lawyers, but you usually don't get there until a dozen posts or so.
