968 as track day (DE) car?
968 as track day (DE) car?
anyone got input or suggestions for a 968 as a track car? i'm looking for an economical car to use for DE's so I can preserve the condition of my 996 and avoid the potential expenses of track weekends with a 996.
i'm not looking to heavily modify the car beyond it's factory condition. at most, tires, seats, and harnesses.

I have a 968 that I use for autocross and DEs. I don't want to beat up my other cars so the 968 is great. I just did suspension, a chip, and exhaust and it runs great.
Good Luck on your search.

not a bad car to play with, but you are likely to get bored quickly in stock trim - most people do in a short time - they ultimately end up modifying them - in stock trim, they are heavy, slow, and lean a lot compared to just about anything out there these days - great car in their day, but need some beefing up to feel right these days - remember, it's a 30 year old design - they can be made to run well though - i love mine
A 944 turbo has more track potential in that engine mods are easier. The 968 motor is in a very high state of tune out of the box, very high compression for a stock motor. Mods are slim. They handle phenomenally well though, and the M030 package handles as well as anything today.
One issue related to above is that 968s REQUIRE 93 octane. Here in CA we can only get 91. My 968 steadily lost power after I moved here even with constant octane booster use. I don't even think that stuff works. Aside from the expense of race gas, you're going to be gambling with the health of a motor that has been running way lean with retarded spark for god knows how long.
I loved my 968 more than any human should but I'd probably go with a 944 turbo for track duty.

yes, mods are slim - i have only been able to get a 15% increase in normally aspirated power, and i have had to design most of my own mods for other stuff
however, actually, they only require 90, but they run better on 93 - below 93, the engine pulls back timing, thereby costing you a couple of ponies - i've seen no damage on any california cars running 91, and there is no mention of anything in the manual or any other literature about it being a problem
there are plenty of stations in california that sell 100 though - i tend to mix 4 gallons of that into the tank to hit 93
