Porsche 928 Sedan?
Porsche 928 Sedan?
Looks like auto car magazine has a story about the Porsche M5 killer ( http://www.autocarmagazine.com), does anyone have the magazine who can scan it. Is auto car the only place that has had articles on this sedan?
Thanks
Thanks
Uh O! PorschePlayboy is one of those "askmeaPorscherelatedquestionpleaseeeeeeee!" types. Kidding just kidding. Check out www.924board.org and find Lizard, you two will have tons to talk about!
Actually, Porsche has twice had plans for a 4-door sedan. The first one was indeed 928-based. I think they were developing it in the early-to-mid 90s but I'm not sure. Some development mules were spotted but obviously it never got off the ground.
Recently development has started again. I read an internal memo from Porsche that said two directions they hoped to go in were a hardtop version of the Boxter (realized in the Cayman) and a 4-door sedan. The sedan idea was criticized for being very expensive, and without a partner to work with them they said it might be too expensive for a small company like Porsche to attempt. The idea of purchasing a 5-series platform or something similar was tossed around but nothing came of it. Recently I've seen some spy photos of a 4-door looking again, somewhat like a 928, with a hatchback and a flat nose. It makes sense for Porsche financially and strategically.

I guess you go where the market will let you. For more than a few years, Porsche did contract assembly work for MB, building the S500 sedan. I suspect that they looked carefully at how MB was able to make money in that rarified market niche.
As far as I know, the only 4-door 928 cars produced at the factory were for 'gifts'. Never even a production consideration. These were built in the mid 1980's, and included a few design cues that became features on the S4+ cars. The front and rear bumpers are specific items that debuted on the 4-door mock-up.
Fast-forward to today, and the only mention of a 4-door "928" is in the press as they consider the similarities of a new front-engined V-8. It's extremely unlikely that the 928 project number would be used twice. Maybe we should come up with a name for it, like the "Calhoun" in keeping the latest trends in Porsche model designations.

Hi Larry--
I saw the link to the video, an of course figured out that I should have blown off the workload that day and gone with you guys to Redondo. I guess we both missed the OC breakfast last Sunday. I almost have to fake an illness to get out of Sunday morning duty just to go to VCR it seems.
Looks like I'll be unavailable again for the LBGP. Used to be heavily involved when it was F1, ran garage security and such from when we did some fine tuninig of the program with the Formula Atlantics way back when. My interest waned when the Champ Car series replaced the circus, but I still like to go watch every few years.
Are your brakes off yet?

Dr. Bob,
The run to Redondo was loads of fun, and we finally ended up somewhere in San Pedro. I had to go to Sacramento on Thursday, and my truck was in the shop so I took the P-car. I had planned on pulling the calipers on Friday and going to Oscar's on Saturday. Well, you know "Best layed plans of mice and men". Oh well, summer is getting closer and the weather will be nicer in Elsinore. I'm not going to make VCR this Sunday, because Randi wants to go to Rosarito. Have fun and say hi to the "Usual Suspects"
Let's try to get together soon.

I think Rob Edwards will be up from Irvine. Both you and Rolf are south for the winter I guess. I'll be there for a while, and may get into Rob's dash a bit to help diagnose a vacuum problem.
Met a new owner this week, Ken works in Burbank at the airport. 84 5sp, very nice car but no headlights. Needs a headlight relay I think. He won't join us Sunday but will next month.
Have fun in Rosarito! Go while the weather is still good there. See you when you get back.
