930 Turbo buying questions

Thinking of a late 80's, trying to find an 89, but they seem scarce. Learn me on the differences and what to watch out for back to 79. Also, price range?

Mainly as a weekend fun canyon car.

Thanks

I'd stick with '86 and newer US version cars. The '89 is desirable because it's the only year model with a 5 speed transmission that is also hydraulic.

This all sounds a bit confused. 930 production ended with the 1989 model year. So the 92-94 series you are comparing to is a different car (964). But I don't think that an early stock 930 was ever 2200 lbs nor is an end of series 3600 lbs. No doubt there was some weight gain due to emission and safety changes, but nothing like the range you are citing. You should consider them essentially equal and just a bit under 3000 lbs.
I recently acquired a low-mileage 1988 and couldn't be happier. It's still early in ownership (I don't plan to ever sell the car) but it seems to be an incredibly well-built car (even better than the current models) great to drive.
You should be aware that cars have so thoroughly evolved over the years that what was the 'hottest car of it's time' is now a mid-pack car. It is 'sneaky fast' in that it's quite surprising to see higher numbers on the speedometer than you'd think. It's that solid construction that ensures little wind noise, no vibration, little sensation of speed. Really incredible. Of course, mine's a coupe. A cab will likely be different.

Another option

Just a thought. I am in the process of selling my 87-930 which has been fully restored and ready for fun times. I am on to a 356 project and need to let her go. Have a look at the link below.

Best of luck in the search,

Amen to that. My dad decided to pick up a nicely modified one last year. I am amazed at how fast it is, yet how comfortable and quiet it is to ride in. It's extremely streetable and quiet, yet when he stomps the throttle with the current exhaust setup it's very loud. Very unassuming to those who aren't familiar with 930s. Almost like a Jekyl and Hyde car!

Josh, you're friend will enjoy this yesteryear supercar for long time provided you maintain them, which is not much, in comparison to the new cars today, too many electronics, mine is a 79 and still turn heads.

in early 80's the supercars were;

lambo...contach
bmw...M1
porsche...930 turbo
ferrari...308

Thanks, do you think the price is reasonable and is there anything in particular we should look for before buying, I apologize for not doing my homework ahead of time, I am just trying to do my friend a favor and I am looking upon the collective knowledge of the board and 930 experts.

Josh

have an independent porsche mechanic check for oil leaks and linkage..i notice intercooler has been upgraded, that's about $2500-$3000, it looks like 18" wheels also. 24 yr old car, avg 3K miles/yr, not bad, price is a premium, price is all over....high 20 to mid 40,
