Project 944

i'm interested in starting up a project car......i think a 944 turbo would be perfect. now since it'll be obviously be a pretty old vehicle what should i look for??? are there any problems i should expect off the bat????

i'd also consider upgrading the turbo and squeezing out some real hp......what are good products?

one last thing is the body, i'd want to make it look pretty damn sweet, so where can i find a good body kit?

thanks for ur help!!!

brent_strong is infamous around these parts
Look at Mike's (mpd47) car again. No body kit needed. I think that is a Euro bumper + splitter with a Lindsey nose panel. Classy + subtle > gaudy and cheap.

I think he's also going to have a mostly stock 944 for sale soon, if you're actually interested. We've been working on getting it ready for sale over the past couple months, usually interrupted by trying to get his own car going.

Maintenence records are probably the most important element in buying one of these cars. Besides the fact that it shows the interest/care put into the vehicle by the previous owner(s), when you do have issues down the road, you'll have something to reference. Personally, the two biggest maintenence indicators to watch out for will be belts and compression. Find out the last time the belts were done and the compression/leakdown numbers. I don't know how much experience you have with cars of this caliber (I'm not too optimistic with your talk about a body kit) but you'd be best to do a lot of research. Coming here is a good first step, but every one of these cars has it's own little issues and you'll need to investigate each prospect accordingly. It's near impossible to find a 951 that is bone stock, you'll need to know exactly what modifications have been made. Even if it's as simple as a set of chips, you need to know where they came from etc. The biggest thing to watch out for is the seller who knows nothing about the car. This sounds stupid but you'd be shocked how many people go out and buy one of these cars because they want a Porsche that says "Turbo" on the back. Just because you can afford purchasing one, it does not mean you can afford owning one. Many people disreguard that fact, buy the first one they see, drive it for 2 years before servicing it. When it breaks they see the estimate to get it fixed and it's for sale, they have no idea what went wrong...you do not want to inherit that kind of problem. So anyways, that's my .02 Good luck
