6 speed gearbox?
6 speed gearbox?
My brother owns a 964 Turbo. Its equipped with a 6 speed gearbox. One of the earlier owner had the 5speed gearbox replaced..
We have a discussion where the box come from
But..could it be a gearbox from a 993TT ?? Or is it a RUF Box?
Can we look for any marks/numbers somewhere on the box?

Should have numbers on the undernearth of gearbox on a flat area about 70mm X 20 mm. Almost the lowest point of the box. Should read something like G50 20 or 21 or 32 ---or G64 etc -- then a serial number about 5/6 digits I think? . Post the number and that will help us identify it.
Yea, the stock 6 speed box is pretty tall, especially if you've got a non- stock motor which revs higher...
We swapped ratios in the box in my '69- first is stock, 2nd and 3rd are custom, 4th is the stock 3rd moved to 4th, 5th is custom, and 6th is the stock 5th. Makes for about 175 mph at 7300 rpm in 6th, which is enough in a '69, but the rest of the middle gears are nice and short, and you're only buying 3 new gears. Highly recommended...

It is true that the wide torque band of the 965 doesn't benefit as much from the 6 speed, and it's also true that US 6 speeds have widely spaced ratios. To say the 5 speed "works better" is oversimplifying to the point of error, though.
The 993 6 speed has on the order of half the shift effort of the 5 speed, ie the synchros spin up quicker for faster shifting. There is a small weight penalty which is outweighed by the better ratio spacing, especially for track use. Geared correctly (not cheap) it’s a great gearbox.
