Lets talk maintanence...

Ive been seriously considering the 964 as my next daily driver, i dont care about loudness, or a stiff ride, i just want a car that if i maintain will not die on me. I have a 95m3 at the moment, and maintanence isnt too bad, i can diy most anything that doesnt require me to jack up the car since my driveway has a wierd tilt and i dont want the car to land on me.

So what are the basic maintanence routines? I know this is kind of a broad question, basically besides oil changes what are things im going to need to replace to keep her runing beautifully. I really want to go pcar and for the price this car seems to be the best decision, taking things into consideration performance, soul, style. I was looking at 994 turbos, s2k's (dont mind the lack of torque balieve it or not, the gearbox is so good i have no problem shifting it all day, the thing that scares me away from buying the car is snap oversteer.) M coupe (subframe failure) 996(99-00) or a 99 m3(i love the e36 m3, LOVE IT).

I dont know if it makes a difference but i have a really good relation ship with a garage that works on porsche and Bmw.

Thank you
koa

If you are really serious about a 964 (as I am), then I'd suggest you buy Adrian Streather's book on that model.
www.adrianstreather.com

No Porsche is inexpensive to maintain unless you are a DIYer, however there are many good independent Porsche mechanics that would be very familiar with the 964 series.

i had my 964 (my first porsche) in the shop a few times and would get chest pain and dizziness every time i got the price for anything done to the car.
I did the 20k service @ an independent and the cost was like $1K, i had the car at another independent for some ac problems and they gave me a quote of something like 1500. the convertible top was the worst... I never even tried taking it to the dealer.
ever since I found these forums and started to diy most of the maintenance and mods, I thought owning porsche is too expensive.
I still am not sure if diy on a 964 is as easy as the newer models, 996 and on.
Just make sure you get a reputable person to do a ppi since you are getting a fairly old porsche which could have lots of potential problems.

I second the Adrian Streather recomendation.

I have spent approx 20k on maintenance on mine in almost 5 years. I bought it with 35k on it (91 c4) and now have just over 100,000 miiles. I have been left on the side of the road a couple of times due to the brake system (ABS Pumps).

I budget out $150 a month to the car maintenance account. When something breaks, Then I am not worried about the financial impact.

I may be a little over my head on most DIY's and I have not found an indy I love.
