Center Lock VS 5 Lug

I dont know if this subjects been done on here so forgive me if iv reposted.

In 2012 I had 997.2 with the 19" centre Lock wheels.

Now as good as they look i found them to be an inconvenience to live with. Here in UK porsche don't offer tyre repair facility you have to purchase a new tyre even if the tyre has only done 100 miles.

Now iv posted on some threads that i am in predicament iv ordered a 991 Turbo S but need to confirm by today what wheels i want the 5 lug don't look as good as the CL but old fashion 5 Lug is just so easy. so im thinking 5 Lug and after-market wheels just gotta decide if i want to lower.

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is and what advice and what you would do in my shoes

Thank you

I had a similar car. 2012 Turbo S. They had CLs. They are nice but from a practical POV the 5 lug would be my choice. I always worried about a road hazard and dealing with the CL. Luckily it never happened but i am getting too old to worry about things like that.

5 lugs for the road for the reasons you mentioned and the fact that you can't really change them with just one person! Plus you need a long **** torque wrench :-)

I went 5 lugs, titanium bolts with the OZ Superforgiatas.

so I assume you opted for the less attractive 5 lug wheels?

No I sold the car with the CLs. I am just saying if I ever decide between the two type of styles in the future I would forgo the CLs. Plus there are a lot of after market wheels at your deposal to choose from.

However cool the CL system looks- get 5-lug, no question. Functionality and convenience trumps aesthetics for a street driver...IMHO.

And yes, CL's LOOK very cool.

I had CL on my 2012 tts also and would reorder CL again if I had the choice. I've removed them about 5x on my tts just swapping wheels and after the 2x it was a lot faster and easier than 5 lug. The only con I would say about the CL wheels are limited aftermarket wheels.

If you want a good looking aftermarket wheel 5 lug is the only way to go. Custom manufactures like HRE, ADV.1, etc can all build for centerlock, but the massive backpad required for the centerlock means the wheels are not only a lot heavier than a 5 lug, but they are a flat profile, rather than the more in-style concave looks.

Buy yourself a proper torque wrench, Precision Instruments sells an excellent 600 ft-lb one for about $350. Comes in a plastic case that fits in the front trunk - 3 piece unit snaps together. Learn how to use it and you'll never worry about CLs again - easier than dealing with 5 lug wheels.

Demounting the low profile tire from a very expensive wheel is the tricky part. I patch nail holes from the inside all too frequently. These tires pick up everything on the road.

Have Turbo S CL's and got the Precision Instruments torque wrench and the 3R Racing dismount/mount guide. Despite many opinions about how difficult the CL's are and the maintenance required for circuit use described in the user manual, the esthetic benefits as well as lower unsprung weight with PCCB's made the decision much easier for me. Also got wheel and tire insurance so apart from a roadside temporary repair in a remote area, for which I may use the factory repair system or maybe a plug with the wheel in place, the dealer can flatbed car and replace damaged wheel or tire. Also, CL's definitely distinguish the car, IMO and that of quite a few others who have seen mine.

So what is the weight difference between the CL wheels and 5 lug?

And add the weight difference of the CC brakes vs. iron?

centerlock wheels weigh significantly more than the exact same wheel in 5-lug.

centerlocks require a massive backpad (the heaviest part of the wheel), whereas the 5 lugs don't, thus reducing the weight of the wheel. like for like centerlocks can add 2-3lbs per wheel to the weight. (Outside of the aesthetic downsides of the center lock I previously mentioned as well).

Not sure the 3R tool is necessary, I looked at it for $350 and decided against it. I have demounted and remounted two wheels since I purchased the torque wrench and had a nail in one of the rear tires. The mounting pins make it a lot easier and thereby safer to remove and also mount the wheel than lug style wheels in my opinion. Had no difficulty with clearing the rotors.

The thing I like about carrying the wrench in the car, if you pick up a nail on the road, with your assistance/instructions any tire shop can demount the wheel and patch it either externally (I also carry plugs which may no longer be legal in some states but work in a pinch) or internally (preferred).

I'd also recommend the wheel and tire insurance, I just used it to replace a rear tire - if you have the car for more than a year and actually drive it, you are going to have blowouts or more likely slow leaks. Makes no difference with slow leakers - 5 lug or centerlocks!
