Dealer tune...anyone??
PM me if you want a referral or more information
who's tune/flash is it ?
I went with the VR tune from Vivid. However, that dealer normally uses the Eurocharged tune. I got a great deal on mine, so I decided to try out VR. My buddy has the Eurocharged setup and I can't tell the difference in the two.
ParkPlace offered a better deal than that to me.
Here is what Park Place told me a couple of months back.
Here is the list of some upgrades we can perform on your 2014 991 Porsche Turbo S:
FVD headers: P:$1849.00 L: $639.76
GIAC flash P: $3500 L: $455.25
IPD intake Plenum P: $950 L: $455.25
BMC engine air filter P: $208 L: $78 if bumper is off for another service. L: $225 if performed by itself
Champion Motorsports Diverter Valves P: $350.00 L: $298 – requires removing the rear bumper
I think the service set up at Park Place looks pretty good. However, since I live in Austin and I didn't want to drop the car up there for a week, I went with the FVD piggyback, FVD headers and the plenum.

That is one reason I liked the piggyback better and the fact that I had already gotten a quote from BlackJack speed shop in SA for $2200 for the GIAC flash not including labor which I think they said was three hours. Same deal with them though, car had to be there three days.
However, the dealer selling the flash has to be an authorized GIAC retailer, and thus have the necessary OBDII cable and GIAC flashing software on hand in order to be able to do it.
The GIAC flash for the 991 Turbo is done via OBDII. The entire process takes about 30 minutes to complete.

The reason you were told the DME had to be removed is most likely because the dealer you went to was not an authorized GIAC installer, so they don't have the necessary equipment to flash it. In those cases, the DME can be removed and sent to GIAC for flashing.
It's been OBDII since long before September...pretty much since the flash was released.

hmmm...I don't have an answer for you then. It is, and has always been, an OBDII flash. It could just be that they were misinformed.
I contacted Austin@GIAC and he said that they (Park Place) are an authorized installer. If they do still have to send out the ECU then I'm not sure why. There is another authorized installer in Dallas. Look up www.autoscope.net. They have three locations in the DFW area. I'm sure they can do it for much cheaper but if Park Place is dangling the warranty over your head if they don't install it then I'm not sure if that is advised. The flash is the flash and there's nothing fundamentally different about Park Place plugging in a cable and autoscope plugging in a cable. The ones and zeros are the same either way. You could probably fight the dealer on it or ask for a better price.

I believe that is legit since they have to remove the DME and send it to GIAC unless things have changed now. At the time they gave me the quote, I think it was a three day process to get the GIAC flash. I don't know if that has changed for the initial flash. I think an update may be possible via OBDII but not the initial one. OCICBW

So probably they gave me a quote for the 991 since it's cheaper than what Park Place gave me?
