GoPro Setup?
GoPro Setup?
Hey all,
Its been a few years since I did much recording, and back then I had a harness-bar-video camera setup. Things are different now.
I don't what to spend more than I need to, but I'd like great video if I can get it. I think there are features I don't need (giant 128GB SD cards) and some that really help (I've heard the LCD on the back of some GoPros really helps get the shot right).
Who uses what, and how do you like it? If you bought a new setup from scratch, what would you buy?

I sold my GoPros and switched to this camera, has built in flash memory so no SD cards to purchase. Downloads directly to your phone. Records 360 degrees so you only need one camera. Works with same mounts as go pros if you have old ones.

For the last 1/2 mile event I bought a GoPro Hero 4 Black, with memory card, mounts, extra batteries, etc. I was about $500 all in.
- The wifi functionality in the iPhone app is awesome... when it actually works. The app allows you to start/stop recording, get a live view of what is being recorded, watch videos, etc. Worked flawlessly when I tested filming at home on a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree, would not work at all when I was racing.
- The 32GB card actually filled up fast... I wasn't able to mess with the camera right before I was about to race so I recorded several minutes of each run and trimmed them down later.
- You will want a second battery if using a GoPro.
- I had a single suction cup mount, it didn't fail but I would have felt more comfortable with a mount that had 2 or 3 suction cups.
- Re: video quality, if you look at my 'build tread' post and watch the video from the 1/2 mile you can see for yourself.
use the rennline go pro mount for the tow hook in front. by a lap[el microphone and run it thru the cabin into the license plate area. this way you get the great visual without the wind noise and great sound from the exhaust
I put one of the sticky mounts on the inside of my windshield and just use the regular holder to mount inside the car. I get good video of the track. You can look at the videos I have posted. I also put a sticky on the back of the car at the top of the rear window and I can mount a second GoPro up there. Usually need two batteries fully charged for a full day track event. Drag racing is easier since you can just turn it on and off before each run and so generally will only need one battery. I have a Hero 4 Black. Never bothered to buy a second one. Too hot here to be running the car anyway.
