991 First Drive

Our local dealer in MN (Carousel Porsche) received their two launch cars yesterday, PP'd them and gave me call to come drive one.

The two cars were both C2S, one black with basic options and one silver with PSE and leather interior. The black car was set up for demo driving.

The weather was overcast and the roads were greasy snow/salt combo and the traffic was mid rush hour so there were very few dry open spots to punch the car.

First impressions were that the steering was very light and effortless. Leaving the parking lot was like pointing, almost telepathic. The car never slid or lost traction (RWD and snow tires) and seemed very planted.

I was not impressed with the power, but after thinking about it I think you need more rev's and I was not about to push a new launch car in bad weather. (Compared to previous cars....with high HP.).

I was very impressed with the basic (plastic) interior. Much improved over the 997. Almost to the point I would not need or want the leather dash.
The doors are nicely trimmed without carpeting and the main cabin carpet is much smoother. These two items really make the interior look more refined.

The engine is very smooth and the sounds are vastly improved. In sport mode you can really hear the new resonator and it's amazing. The car has personality ! The aftermarket exhaust guys are going to have to work very hard to up sell this car. (Side note: as I was driving away the car was coming back from another test drive and sound it made was very very nice). I think Porsche has paid attention to the market and scored a winner here.

I'm sure I'll get a drive on a dry road in a few days and update this...

I would like to thank Ed and Dave at carousel for the test drive and I am jazzed at getting my Cab in April.

Hi Dave,

Thanks so much for the great review. I am wondering if the one you test drove has the "power steering" option. I have heard such good things about the standard exhaust (in Sport mode) and great interior sans leather. Seriously if you wanted to save some good coin those 2 alone are close to 10k here in Canada. Can't wait to get up and personal with the 991 this week some time.

Joe

Platinum Silver... just an overcast day.

Color is stunning under the shop lights.

Did the interior feel tighter then the 997.2? It looks much more cramped with that center dash

Sorry to jack the thread but might be a good place to add. Trying to help a friend configure his Carrera Cab (non S). We have agreed on everything except for the performance options. He wants to pick two of the options below and not all 4.. I told him to go with all 4 He is not going to track but will do the occasional spirited drive, I just feel that PASM and PTV are nice to haves where as Sport Chrono and PSE would definitely add a lot more to the overall experience/look of the car. Once all the options are added we are literally at the starting price of a non-optioned Cab S - thoughts?

Performance
Sport Exhaust System 176
$3,370
Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) 220
$1,510
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) 475
$2,390
Sport Chrono Package 640
$2,110

I would step up to the C2S and add the Sport Chrono. Resale would be much better.

How so?

Would it be easier to sell? Better residual value?

Just curious as I have read this a lot.

Who knows, I am not even certain (nobody is) whether the car comes in pure sport mode if its not ordered with it! You see in my T4S the 1st button I hit after starting the car is the sport mode, I don't enjoy driving it in "norma" but not sure how the 991 is without SC.

I'd get the non-optioned S. It already has PTV along with PASM and, of course, more power. The S comes standard with a "Sport" button, so if you're getting a manual transmission, Sport Chrono isn't absolutely necessary. Also, I've read on several forums that the exhaust note of the S is great and PSE might not be necessary. If price is an issue, I'd definitely trade these options for the extra power.

Good point on the Pasm & PTV ... Sport mode comes standard on both the Carrera and Carrera S.
