Brake squeak

I picked up my 991S a few weeks ago and have been thoroughly enjoying the ride... except for the brake squeak that started happening recently.

I've looked at a lot of threads on this topic. It sounds like a common problem in older models. Braking more firmly (changing how I drive) and bedding-in the brakes are the suggested remedies. Are you guys experiencing it on your 991?

The way I drive it - I would see a stop light, apply the brake and when the car is almost completely stopped, I'd let go the brake pedal slightly just so the car doesn't jerk to a stop. Its right at the moment when I let go the brake pedal slightly that the brakes start to squeak.

Any advice? Maybe clean off the brake dust a lot more studiously?

OK, please post back if your dealer is able to fix it.

I have exact same issue as you describe it. For me i hear it in the rears. Dealer tells me it's what you have to put up with with these types of racing/high performance breaks. At least that's what he telling me. Don't know how true.

Ok, im worried...

So, is this when the brakes are applied or just normal low speed rolling? My BMW is driving me nuts with this issue which is when car rolls at low speeds not when brakes are applied. I know it's due to brake wear sensors on BMW and there's NO FIX...it'd be good to understand if it's similar issue on 991s as it does have upgraded wear sensors on these new cars...

It only happens when you're applying the brakes lightly.

Live with it or sell the car, at least that's the impression I got from the service advisor. Then PCNA said "it's by design." WTF???!! That's my experience. So learn to live it or get rid of the car. I still have my car.

Exclamation I take a side order of Squeal please...Not!

Elam,

I am truly sorry for your brakes Squealing. High performance or not, I too can not, and Will Not, have any Mechanical Squeals of any kind.

If you feel like you want to tackle the problem, try Brake Disk Quiet as shown here: It could be as simple as that. My Toyota Tacoma has this type of Rubber Backed metal Shims that appear to Quell this Squealing, but I do not know how the Porsche Brakes are installed.

If that didn't work, i would try Suncoast for new Pads as shown >>here<< If that didn't work, and I still owned the Squealing car, i would try New rotors.

I wouldn't have Porsche do the work unless, they were going to replace their German OE pads with another type, of either German Pads or different Pad Material.

I am hoping that someone could try any of these methods and report back to us, because i will NOT drive a squealing car anymore than I would drive a car without a driver seat!

I have exactly the same problem. The noise comes as I gently apply the brakes and tried to brake hard a few times to break them in; it would go away for a while and then comes back the next time I take the car out. Very annoying and guess if this persists I will have to takek the car it. I have done 1000km on the car so far.

This is extremely normal and expected on a high performance car. Proper bedding of the brakes WILL stop the squeal for a while and is a smart thing to do regardless. Your stopping distances will be much shorter and you will potentially save yourself from an accident. Oh yeah ABS doesn't need to kick in nearly as often too. If you need instruction on how to bed the brakes I can post a very informative video.

Here is the post. I will say in advance that unless you are tracking or aggressively driving the car, don't heat em up to the point of smoke, it's a bit overkill, but the rest of the info is good regardless how you use the car! After you do this, the squeek will be gone as long as there is pad material on the rotor. If it starts squeeking again, repeat the process.

Enjoy!
