Road America track day in the rain
Road America track day in the rain
Was at Road America on Friday for the March of Dimes Drive for Babies fundraiser. While it was fun to go driving for a charity, it was way too crowded. It was a perfect day for lots of horsepower on a racetrack... 45 and raining. We drove the chicane instead of the Kink. Probably a good idea with the wet track.
They originally put me in group 2 out of 5. It was like an LA parking lot. I was moved to group 1 for the 2nd session. A friend and fellow instructor jumped in my car for session 2. It was pouring rain and we had a ball sliding around and searching for grip. And great for my ego to blast past so many people. 130 mph in the rain at the end of the front and back straights! Drove the PDK in manual in the rain. I often had wheel spin at the top of the RPM range in the first 3 gears.
I finally got my camera charged and put it in for group 3. The track was starting to dry out. If you got off line at all, it was still very slippery. I decided to take it easy and tuck in behind someone who was pretty quick in an M3. He was more aggressive in some of the higher speed corners. I was still concerned about the track being wet. We were both conservative in the hard braking zones. I had scared myself a little in the rain going into turn 8 and thought it was best to make sure I was driving my car home later that night. When we go clear track, you can see that the 991 had significant pull on him. Keeping in mind that he was driving a manual and had a passenger. We also figured out that with 7 speeds I was able to find better gearing coming out of some of the slower corners. 3rd would not give him enough pull and 2nd would run out before track out. He later got into a M3 Lime Rock Park Edition with DSG. He felt it was quicker.
In Session 4 I didn’t have anyone to play with so I just wandered around.
All in all this car is just crazy fast. I would really like to get it on a dry track with GT3 or GT3RS (with someone who can drive). In one of the video you can see we pass a GT3RS. With it being wet and only 45 degrees, I would bet he was struggling with his Pilot Cup tires.

PS. This video is just for your enjoyment. It is not a 991 but a 1974 911RSR. A friend and my instructor, Jim Pace, driving in the Le Man 24… in the rain…at night… on slicks. Truly awesome.
