Detroit Shooter is infamous around these parts
991 S standard Exhaust and PSE Exhaust

I am looking to make a change to my exhaust. I would like something more aggressive.

In reading what is available in the aftermarket I come across references to the 991S coming standard with muffler valves without PSE? Is this true? If so is how are they actuated?

Yes the Rear Center Muffler has Valves from Factory in the "S". They Open/Close automatically with RPM.

If you are intrested in more Motorsport Sound may i suggest a Cargraphics Exhaust system? There are many options avaliable. And all 3 Options for the Center Exhaust have Flaps that can be used with your "S".

I was aware of the valves in the base exhaust before I had the PSE installed and thought it might make it easier than earlier 911s - not the case. They still run new vacuum lines for the PSE.

PSE is great. Like everyone says the pops and crackles in the overrun are great. I wish there was a way to make them last longer. They occur on the overrun (when you take your foot off the gas) for 3-4 seconds. Also the sound of the exhaust is much more baritone-deep-racecar like than prior PSEs. I love it because of its duality. With sport plus and exhaust off in 7th gear its a pleasure to cruise on the highway. If I had other cars and this was my weekend adrenaline shot, I think I would opt for a slightly more aggressive exhaust without a dual mode.

- Also, when my PSE was installed my sound symposer (the pipe to the intake) stopped working??? It's still not functioning. The retrofit PSEs are still new in other words.

Good luck.

Also - I have a black/black with platinum wheels (which I'm obsessed with). Pick up a set of euro white side markers for the front to replace the orange ones. Its sleek with the monotone look of the euro lenses. Suncoast has them for @$40.00.

I have the PSE. I note a distinct change in the tone of the exhaust at just about 3200 RPM. It seems to diminish at the RPM"s go higher.

I am still in break-in so I am talking up to 4,200 RPM.

The sound difference is apparent with or without the PSE activated but maybe a little more with the PSE off.

Is this the values opening?

Frankly, I am not crazy about the sound as it kind of abruptly changes and it really isn't that appealing of a sound.

I had PSE on my 997.2 and I've heard it on the 997.1 (better). I got the PSE on the 991 and I think I know what you mean by not that appealing a sound.

The older cars had a raspy porsche boxer sound to them. The 991 PSE sounds like a motorsport exhaust. If you've heard a cup car, an RSR or even a GT3 with any aftermarket exhaust you know what I mean. Its a boomy baritone noise now. I'm a track guy, so I like it. But I can see how some might miss the classic 911 sound.

I do love the fact that with the sport button(s) off and exhaust off it cruises very nicely when you're not in the mood to 'drive loud'. The 997.2 was not that quiet with the exhaust off.

I probably wasn't clear...

I like the PSE sound.

What I wonder about is the abrupt change in tone that occurs at about 3,200 RPM with either exhaust setting, normal or PSE. In the normal setting the change is quite noticeable and that change is what I find unappealing.

I just wonder if that is due to the "value" opening that was mentioned earlier in the thread.
