I don't know but I wouldn't chance it. There's no reason to leave the wheel at full lock with the engine running.

Well, I spent the last few days driving a loaner Audi and while it is a nice car, and the tires do not to the shudder thing when backing the car out of the same space as my Turbo, I got back in the Turbo last night and oh man the difference is amazing. Then today I picked up my 02 Boxster from the dealer and drove it to work. Same reaction. Amazing difference between the Audi and the Boxster.

Give me the Turbo or my Boxster and the shudder under full lock at low speed any day.

I believe it comes from a combination of the cold and the steering geometry which is set up to give more traction when the tires are hot on the track. At full turn, the wheels are not parallel.

I had this in my 997 and I have it in the 991 ... it is the hard as concrete tires in the winter and I would guess due to the short wheel base.

It is a cold weather thing and being that it was normal in the 997 and 991 in cold weather I would not give it much thought ... once the weather warms up it will be gone.

More likely the summer performance compound than the wheelbase. Note that the owners manual and manufacturers literature advise not driving on them at near freezing temps. Moderate speeds cornering and expect longer stopping distances.

Is it possible that the skipping is maybe the ratcheting of the ABS brakes? Maybe that system is sensing the tire sliding and (even at the very low speed) thinks that it should attempt to control a skid?

This happened to me too, heard thumping coming from front wheels and full turn. Bought it back to dealer and they told me the same thing, it is normal due to the tires not warming up fully. Says in the summer, the sound should disappear.

The tires that come on the 991 are not intended to be used below something around 42'F. In Germany proper winter tires are mandated.

No, at these speeds ABS would not be functioning.

I get the shuddering and it usually is 65 degrees where I live. Maybe temps have some impact for some people, but I think it's just the design of the steering and the car

I don't know about that, my winter tires have never skipped. Anyone have experience with Pilot Sports, I'm thinking of ditching the P-Zeros?

Bump

I have a brand new 2014 panamera turbo.

It seems to have the same problem with that loud knocking noise coming from the front when turning at low speeds. Especially on u turns and slight inclines.

Dealer wrote to Germany and they said to check CV joint and wheel bearings .... (On a new car???)

The sound is disconcerting.

Help, any updates? Thanks

It's the caster angle of the front wheels combined with wide tires. There is no "update" to be had as there is no "issue" to resolve.

More info on why the tires skip in this thread:
