Strange noise coming out of the front tires

When I trun the steering wheel all the way there is strange noise coming from the front tires when I drive the car. It is like the tire is going to come off the rim? This is only during low speed such as parking for pulling out of the driveway. I have the optional steering plus. Does anyone have this issue? It just recently started... thanks..

I notice this in cold weather only, and had it in my 997 as well as my new 991, and my R8. I am no engineer, but I think all these low sports cars with big wheels and low profile tires can do this. Someone also told me a cold stiff tire will do it.

Oh man, don't worry.

My 991 C2s was perfect, then i put on wheel spacers and that noise came out for me too. Now that u make me think about, it all started with this cold climate.

But i had it also on my BMW M3 and it was nothing to worry about.

Sport car with large tires do it...

Oh boy... thanks... I never had this issue with 997.2 Targa 4S.... It must be the summer tire. What does the dealer recommends?

Did you have an E92? I had one with the comp pkg and 19" super sports and didn't run into this issue. Like someone else mentioned, I do have the 5mm wheel spacers so is it possible its rubbing somehow?

Been present since day one with my 02 Boxster.

Due to the front suspension/steering geometry (big caster plays a major role along with ambient temp and tire condition) with these cars the inner front tire does not make full contact with the pavement at full wheel lock.

You can confirm this easy enough: Turn the steering wheel to full lock, shut off the engine (not good for the power steering system to leave it at full lock with the engine running) and get out of the car and look at the inner front tire. You'll see about half its tread face is off the pavement. (At least this is the case with my Boxster and I've never bothered to look at my Turbo's inner front tire like this.)

When you back out or pull in at slow speed on cold tires at full lock the inner tire skips and makes the noise/vibration you report.

This AM backing the Boxster out and it gave one big shudder when the inner front tire ran over the water that had dripped from the car's body overnight.

This shuddering is the price you pay for a car that is designed to remain stable and safe at its V-max.

Does this still apply to electric assist?

Time to change to winter tires! The summer tire compound gets very hard and at low speeds and high turning angles they sound like they are tearing apart. Good quality winter tire compounds do not have this problem as they are designed for the lower ambient temperatures that they are used in.

I have a 2012 Carrera, and noticed the same thing. Even took a video with my phone and sent it to the dealer. They checked it out and drover other 991's. Said it was normal. I still think it is dissapointing, but it is what it is.

The dealer checked mine out and mechanic wrote "Performs as designed"
and Yes, it's very disappointing.

A simple solution for all cars with wide low profile rubber: don't turn the wheel all the way to the lock. Try backing off a bit at a time and you will find the spot it stops "skipping". You will still have lots of "turn" to work with.
