Haha... It's all about the smile. I also got the advice from my sales guy that if I'm not tracking it, it really wasn't going to benefit from most of the acronyms or 14% more HP and that the base is fantastic. (Lower 0-60 time with PDK, had I been interested in that - and it was manual that had me grinning ear-to-ear!)

I skipped the sunroof this time around - still gun-shy after having a glass sunroof (Passat, not on a Porsche) explode out on the highway a couple of years ago. I'm not a big enough fan of having it open to overcome that memory!

Anyway, mine should show up (finally!) around this coming Wednesday, and I can't wait, it's totally distracting me at this point. (Forums, tracking the boat, making sure I have clear side markers waiting, etc. Everything important. )

Hey man,

had same problems as yours regarding the sunroof squeak which has been fixed. Dealer is also replacing the entire driver's side panel due to rattling side window adjust switch and other cosmetic issues. I have also opted for a base car as I have no intentions of tracking it and drive it daily (I have already satisfied my racing aspirations a few years ago in open wheel racing ...which almost killed me). All I have to say, do not compromise, bring it in until all issues are fixed.

I have the harmonic buzz from the engine compartment at 3100rpm too. I thought it might be something from my aftermarket x-pipe, but after listening to different parts of the engine as the wife held the car at 3100rpm, it's coming from someplace higher up in the engine bay. The noise itself is tinny and metalic, similar to lifter noise in cadence, but a totally different tone.

On the topic of general satisfaction, am I the only one who is a little let down by the around town performance? Coming from a Boxster Spyder, I feel the mid-range performance just isn't there. Besides that, I love the car - worlds better than my previous daily driver, an M3.

Just sounds like there is a point in vibration or frequency that causes something to rattle against something. Hence "buzz". I've checked the license plate,
the rear bonnet is secure. I'm going to try it with the wing manually up and see if it changes the scenario
Some folks have reported loose exhaust tips making a buzz noise in PSE valve transitions- might try seeing if they are loose.

What about checking the harmonic balancer??? Maybe it's not balanced correctly.

Just a hunch, but did you opt for the Lo-Jack installation? On our NSX, the Lo-Jack antenna or part of the mount did exactly as you describe. They have several places to install it on each type of car so thieves can't make a quick check and know whether you have it installed. And the mechanics don't expect it to be there, so it can take forever to realize what is causing the problem.

Drove us nuts. We decided it was an eccentricity of a fine car and learned to ignore it. Mostly. But we never quit being annoyed if I'm honest. Then the car got totaled by a service driver and in the weeks of trying to save it, I mentioned the harmonic noise to a top body man and pointed to the area: "Well, at least we won't be annoyed by the rattle anymore." He said, "Oh you mean your Lo-Jack? That's where we found it." Ten years!

If you did buy Lo-Jack, it's worth checking if you can figure out how to find out where they installed yours.

It's nice to see that others here have and love their base 991s. With the majority of posts here, I was beginning to think that I was one of the few who opted not to get an S.

Mine has been great too! No problems at all. And no oil consumption at all. My 09 burned oil like a two stroke!

I'm glad you brought that up. I've found the same oil consumption phenomenon. Even worse, my 2007 used to send out a big puff of smoke sometimes when started cold. The gauge on my 991 now indicates 1 bar down in 5,000 miles- and no puffs on start-up. I was beginning to worry that the gauge was broken.

One of life's greatest mysteries - why some 911s use oil like it's going out of style and some don't burn a drop. Manufacturing or assembly differences? Break-in procedures? Mine almost negates the need for periodic oil changes since I religiously add a qt./1000 mi. Probably should insist on a free quart a month with my 991 on order.

11,500 miles and I used about .75l in the first 1500 miles. Changed the oil at 2k, 6k and 9.5 k. Haven't used any oil since. A lot of highway driving so I doubt that I am accumulating any water in the oil. I kept it below 4k rpm for the first 2500 miles

I don't push the engine hard often and average 26 mpg in mixed use

Perhaps we should post our mileage, type of use, mpg, oil change frequency and oil consumption
