Positioning of the new Cayman S vs. base 991
@19thhole. Exactly my point. The 991 has really become a car for a GT buyer, the Cayman us more for a traditional Sportscar buyer. A person that values the rawer, more visceral experience. They want to hear the exhaust more, they want less isolation from the road and they don't care what fits in it. It's more of a tool for driving.
I see a near future where the Cayman S and 991 have very similar numbers, but attract very different buyers.
My guess is the 991 is just going to get more and more refined (two door version of Panamera) and The newer cars will take the more sporting/visceral route. They will be considered Second or third cars, whereas the 991 is the DD or second car for many people.

I suspect however that there are those who will absolutely fall over at the thought of the Cayman being declared the “driver’s car”!
(And yes, I know what a GT3 is...

Porsche could drop a 400 hp engine into the Cayman and it would be as fast a sports car as a 991 with 400 hp. But it would need the same parts and cost the same as a 991. It would not be as fast a sports car as the 450 hp 991- but would mess up the broader market spread that Porsche has created to its profit.
