Moisture inside tail lights
Normal ? - not in my book
Defective - Yes
Just a PITA on a brand new 991.
Thanks anyway.
I disagree. They are not defective.
It is very common in the 996/986 and 997/987 and all Cayennes. Probably consistent for 991/981 and Panamera, too.
These units have rubber seals, but they are intentionally not vacuum-sealed to avoid warping and distortion. They contain ambient air in them. When you start the car up and drive it out of the garage some mornings, the sudden change in temperature from the DRL's high-voltage zenon bulb will condense the moisture inside the lens. It then evaporates and goes away as the air equalizes.
Funny...they never get dirty inside, which kind of confirms that they are water resistant, but not vacuum sealed. It's just ambient condensation.
Nothing to worry about.

go for a drive and when I get home there's droplets & fogging inside the lens. When the
lights warm up is when the moisture happens...not right in any stretch of the imagination.
In my view, moisture and electrical stuff in an enclosed area are not friends.
I have owned more cars than I care to admit to & in only one Acura did this happen and they replaced the tail light because it was defective.
This is what I mean....on a $125K car? Am I picky...damn right & predict it won't heal by itself.

So, you're saying that the heat from the DRL's high voltage xenon bulb will condense the moisture inside the lens. First of all, the OP said it is taillights, not DRL's. Aren't the DRL's LEDs and not xenons? They are on a 997. Regardless of whether they are front or rear lights, you have an interesting and very unconventional theory on condensation. Since when did heat cause condensation? Doesn't condensation occur when relatively warm, moist air contacts a cold surface?
There are valves/channels to let the air circulate to prevent excessive heat build-up.
These can get blocked with dirt. If they are cleaned by the dealer the problem will be solved.
Never taken the bumper off before.
I'm two hours away from the dealer unfortunately.
This forum is a wonderful resource!
Also when re-installing the lights DO NOT "over tighten" the screws as the plastic of the tail light mounts has been notoriously brittle...
I've had a similar issue with my 996 and it turned out that there were little rubber caps on the venting tubes to keep dust and dirt out during shipping and sitting on the dealer lot which were suppose to have been removed when prepping the car.
This could also be the case on yours.
1/31/13....Problem still exists.
Dealer service advisor says he's going to get back to me
on what they are going to do, but has not done so yet....
Guess I can't complain about the service - there isn't any.

I have no idea how to do it. My local dealer did it for me.
The gray caps are the 991 tail light vents I understand (photo sent to me from a friend)...anybody know what to do next or how they are supposed to function?
The tails are moisture free before I drive, but after a short time driving, fog & droplets form inside the lens. I expect heat from the motor.
I think the lights themselves run pretty cool.
