Did I do something stupid?
I love how that 6+1 valved aluminum air-intake looks, very sexy!
BTW if you're not reusing the stock exhaust I'm still looking for a set of extra valves for my custom exhaust set up.
Let me know if you'd be interested in having those cut off and selling them to me.
You're a wild man!
I may just have to follow in your foot steps...
Awesome posts!
Oh BTW with the 996 and 997 the X package came with a special oil cover which had multiple compartments stopping the oil from slushing from side to side and making sure it was never empty on hard cornering... does the X-51 package come with this as well?

As for the oil cover? NFI (no flipping idea). I'm more of a Porsche enthusiast than a technical. I'll try to find out for you.
There was a cute little blue washer on one of the tables. I would like to buy it for $1. Let me know if you take PayPal.
No I don't think you did something stupid at all. Having said that, personally I would have had this done on the original build and been done with it. But I digress.
Yes the Turbo S brings a whole different thing to the table as far as power increase; however there is a serious delta in price between the two. I've said it once and it bears repeating, the porsche engine HP increase is a very expensive venture, on a "cost-per-HP" basis. In this light, the powerkit seems like a very good value, when you figure for a porsche you can spend at least $1k per legitimate 1 HP increase. So 30 extra ponies for under $20k is a bargain.
Then you also have the issue NA vs FI. The NA also revs higher. To my ears there is absolutely no comparison between the sound of a NA flat-6 vs a Turbo S- don't get me wrong I love the Turbo S... and to me the sound of the car is a part of the visceral sport-car experience. Sadly, I have heard better sounding turbo engines that didn't sound nearly as muffled, than the Porsche (which sounds sort of like a vacuum cleaner). Wish it wasn't the case. Just my thoughts.
YMMV.

I personally would trade my car in for a 991 GT3 when it comes out, rather than go this route. Obviously, that would be the more expensive route, but the weight reduction adds a lot performance in addition to the HP gains, which makes it worth it.
Yeah, I completely understand. But for me, the GT3 is too much, too much nose (not enough clearance), too much moolah, and too late to wait.
This is my first Porsche, so I'm making it mine. I plan to keep it. I'll probably change my mind on that in a few years too and jump to a 960!! ;-)

OMG, Chup!
1. Great pics!!
2. Amazing intake! Obviously that's a big part of the improvement
3. If I didn't know better, I'd say the new engine wouldn't fit in the car. I've worked on many early 911 engines and those now look like toys in my mind. I want to see you put a couple of turbos on it. Have you met Ruf?
4. Can't wait to hear your impressions and performance data.

Well that looks like a straightforward bolt-on job (with way too many bolts-on)!
Someone posted vids of pre-break in rides up some mountain roads in another thread with an x-51 and it sounded even better than simple PSE.
Congrads on making the jump! Really looking forward to your reactions.

Finally go to do some driving with the X51, sans warning lights. First off, due to the X51 being a retrofit, I do not get a Loud button. The PSE becomes active once I select the Sport or Sport Plus button. In comfort mode, I can hear a new tone to the exhaust. It's almost like a tenor voice was included in the choir, not a bass sound, definitely not a high pitched noise, but there is a new sound coming out.
Is there a difference in the 'feel' of the car? In comfort mode, I would say yes, but I think it is psychological right now due to the difference in sound. Not having PSE previously, I cannot say if there is a change beyond hearing PSE for the first time in my own car. Like I said before, when in Sport or Sport Plus, the car behaves like a puppy on a sugar rush. It wants to run, it likes to rev.
Now the monetary and misgivings portion of the review. I was able to get a Price Match for the upgrade, so the cost was not as high as getting it from the build, $17,000. Saying that you do get the extra boost in power, PSE with the button, new exhaust, Sport Chrono package, third radiator, and the new sports exhaust tail pipes. Buying those items separately costs about $6,000 not including the third radiator or thirty HP. So, doing the math, the last two items cost $11,000. Would you put out that much money for an extra 30HP? It's a rhetorical question, and I do not expect responses to it. As for the retrofit, I really wanted the PSE button! Instead it is incorporated into the Sport/Plus buttons, which is good and bad. I cannot turn it off without going to Comfort mode, not much of a big deal there. But I REALLY wanted that button (Quiet Psycho Sid). And if you did not already have the Sport Chrono Package, you still won't have it even though you will end up paying the same amount of money as if you got it initially installed.
So, would I do anything different knowing now what I do? Yes, I would have gotten the PSE to start. I was talked out of the PSE, not really knowing what I was missing. Reminding everyone, my car was one of the first wave of 991s to arrive in the country. I did not have the option to get the X51 upgrade. If it was available as an option then, I probably would have taken it as it is a good value overall. Do you as a regular Joe need to do it? I would not think so. In my case I sorta caught the track bug, and I had some Christmas money too
.
Finally, I am happy with the decision. You may not do it, that's fine. You can save your money. But I wanted the 991 when it first came out. I have it now, and I am making it mine. I do plan to keep it as close to factory as I can though. I like to think I have some taste. In ending, I have many extra parts that I will be selling off to the first people to respond. I will put these in another post.
Thanks!
