Ordering process

So I placed my order almost two weeks ago and haven't heard from my dealer since. I've called and spoken to him once and he said his boss is out of town and he is the only one that can check on the status.

How long did it take you to get a build date? This is my first porsche so I figured I'd ask here what the process is like and what information the dealer should be giving me and when. I tried searching but didn't see much.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting a build date. First, your dealer actually has to have an open build allocation. Yes they are actually limited and this is where the waters get pretty murky. If you are using a large dealership that is thought of a very good to work with, they can be either of two situations; 1) they are so good that PCNA gives them every car they ask for or 2) they can't get enough cars for the orders they take. It is not unheard of that it may take 2-3 weeks to secure a build slot. PCNA then needs to accept your configuration (up to another 2-3 weeks). The factory will then give a tentative build date date. As you get closer to that date it will change almost daily for about 2 weeks. this is due to actual parts availability.

when you car finally goes to the paint shop it should be about 5 days from completion. Then depending on the ship schedule it can get on a ship the next day or wait as long as 10 days. Shipping time from Germany to the East Coast is 3-4 weeks. Then US Customs gets involved and another 2 days to 2 weeks to get posrt clearance. then a truck to your dealer.

This process takes a lot of patience! But it is worth the wait.

It is unusual that only one person atthe dealer can check your car's status. I know the guys I work with all have access to the system. In fact my sales guy checks order atatus every morning (it updates overnight) and would send me regular status reports as the process moved along.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I'll keep checking with the dealer. It is a small dealer and the sales guy did mention they need to trade with other dealers for slots but said they do it all of the time.

How long did you wait till you had your build date? It's been 3 weeks for me and all the dealer tells me is that I'm in W300 which is preproduction. Is this normal?
