I believe buyers each have a prioritization of:
-Performance/driving experience- for ex: I believe Porsche will loose many buyers in the future like myself that strongly value the experience of a manual.
-Exclusivity/ Cache
-Brand loyalty
-Value(price and practicality)
Depending up ones prioritization of the above
4 factors- people will shift from one brand/model to another.
If one desires cutting edge top shelf performance(turbo/gt3 levels), and a manual transmission ...more than they value exclusivity and brand loyalty they will happily move to what better fits their priorities.
Personally as a young entrepreneur I started off looking at the corvette, then moved "up-market" after experiencing the visceral 911 experience and valuing the backseat practicality.

As an owner of both a 911 and Corvettes, I can tell you that results is what drives consumption. My C6Z06 is an amazing automobile, but from a luxury standpoint not so much...that is what drove me to a 997tts performance + quality of craftsmanship & materials. The C7 really has raised the bar (rear end styling aside)...the Z06 will come out next year and lap the ring faster than an Italia, F12, TTS, or MP4-12C...with an interior that has the same quality materials and fit and finish for 1/3 the cost of these guys it will cause them to have to raise their game. It great because GM is pushing the envelope and for the first time is trying to put the same focus on the interior details and quality that they put into performance. To each their own, but I'm glad I'm living through the real muscle car era first hand!

I owned a 2006 Z06. I know the newer ones are better. The one I had handled amazingly well. It was a blast to drive. It was in a lot of ways an incredible car.

In other ways, it was subpar. Tire noise was very loud in the cabin. On a hot day your fingers would freeze from the cold air, and the back of your head would feel very warm. Packages in the back would feel 20 degrees hotter on the bottom of them, when you removed them. It creaked. The seat felt good to my 6' 2" frame, but offered very little holding power in the turns. The dash looked cheap. The fit of body panels was definitely not precision.

I still loved my car. In 2 years, I put 40,000 miles on it.

Will I buy another one? Probably not for a daily driver. Perhaps for a fun track car.

Interior quality and comfort, as well as the driving experience were my main reasons for choosing a Porsche. That, and I wanted a new experience in a sports car. Is the Porsche a better car? I don't know yet. Delivery will be in a few months. Is the Porsche a better car for the money? I would be highly surprised. The Vette is a performance car bargain. The Porsche is not in my opinion. That is unless you compare it to a Ferrari or Lamborghini. In which case it may or may not be. I'll let you know what I think after I get my Porsche

You may dream of a P-car and can not afford it (I, of course, personally wish everybody could), then consider other options and go for a 'Vette. But if you are in the market for a 911, you will not take that step.

If anything, it is flattering that a brand needs to position itself by referring to another (stronger) brand. You'll never read a Porsche ad saying "almost as fast as a Ferrari but only half the price!".

The closest thing they had done was this :

I remember this commercial when they used the Alice Cooper song, "School's Out".
It's my favorite Porsche commercial of all time. I was 18 and the 944t was my dream car. What memories...

I had a C6. Good car with good creature comforts (the auto lock / unlock is much better than the 911, and the heads-up display was nice), but didn't like sitting close to the rear wheels and absorbing all the bumps. It also had too much torque for the weight over the rear wheels and I was constantly spinning them, drawing attention when all I wanted was a little acceleration.

I thought this is why it sold so well in 'Murica...

Something about a thrill to drive dangerously, while wrapping it nicely around trees.

Though, I'm not sure why some here draw a connection from the C6 to the C7. To me, that's like saying,"I had a Ferrari 355, so I don't think I'd consider the F430."

(Yes, I think that is about how much different the two generations will be)

Whereas if we note the MANY differences between the C6/C7 and compare them to either 996/997 vs 997/991 vs 996/991, I'd suggest this would be equivalent to a 996/991 transition... maybe even a 993/991 transition?

I mean, with a completely new chassis, interior, suspension, technology, etc... there is almost nothing in common with its predecessors except that the engine is in front, RWD, and 2 -seats.
