Corvette gunning for Porsche

They are not coming after Porsche too hard are they. Even the power package is named similarly.
2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Priced From $51,995

By Nelson Ireson | HighGearMedia.com, Apr 26, 2013 04:33 PM EDT
highgearmedia.com

Bold new styling, hugely improved interior design and materials, and even greater performance stand to make the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray a significant upgrade from the already impressive sixth-generation Corvette.

  •
    • 2014 Jaguar F-Type
    • 2014 Acura RDX
    • 2013 Toyota Corolla

Despite the upgraded look and feel, the seventh-generation 2014 model will cost just $2,000 more.

Starting at $51,995, including destination fee, the 450-horsepower 2014 Stingray is a bargain for its power and predicted handling and performance level, nearly matching the 265-horsepower base Porsche Boxster, and nearly $50,000 less expensive than the 911 Carrera S and its 400 horsepower.

The Corvette Stingray Convertible will start from $56,995.

For that base price, you'll get the 2014 Corvette Stingray with:

Several packages are available, upgrading equipment and interior materials. Those include the following equipment, as specified on the 2014 Stingray Convertible shown at the 2013 New York Auto show:
The 3LT package includes: navigation; Napa leather seating; leather-wrapped dash and instrument panel, console, and door panels; a Bose 10-speaker surround sound system; color heads-up display; plus heated and ventilated seats with power lumbar and bolster adjustment.
A Z51 Performance package is also available, adding 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels; transmission cooling; high-performance gear ratios; up-sized slotted brake rotors with cooling ducts; an electronic limited-slip differential with cooler; improved chassis tuning; and Chevy's Performance Traction Management system. Magnetic Ride Control dampers are also available.

When fitted with the Z51 package, Chevy claims the Stingray is capable of a 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds and more than 1 g in lateral grip.
More packages and prices will likely be released as the 2014 Corvette Stingray draws nearer its sales launch this fall.

The "Z51" package is not something new, but all the statements comparing Corvette's to Porsche's are just there to make (potential) 'Vette owners feel good about the car. It is not my intention to bash Corvettes, but very few people are cross-shopping between a Corvette and a Porsche. You may dream of a P-car and can not afford it (I, of course, personally wish everybody could), then consider other options and go for a 'Vette. But if you are in the market for a 911, you will not take that step.

If anything, it is flattering that a brand needs to position itself by referring to another (stronger) brand. You'll never read a Porsche ad saying "almost as fast as a Ferrari but only half the price!".

The closest thing they had done was this :

BTW, it can be interesting to see how Porsche is perceived on Corvette forums. Check this link : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/off-...ommercial.html.

I still have not recovered from this statement probably coming from one of the brightest minds of his generation: "they (Porsche) are, in addition to losing sales to other makes, suffering some serious erosion of actual selling prices. This will further constrain sales, make dealers unhappy, and make all those fastidious socialists who make the cars worry about their rosy future."
And this was in 2011, after the Government had to bail out the glorious GM brand with taxpayer's money

I'd be curious if anybody has data for cross shopping between corvette and porsche (someone who works for edmunds, JD Power, etc.). I agree with you, can't imagine too many people cross shopping a 911 and a C7. Porsche doesn't really have to beat the C7 in performance/handling. Just keep it close enough.

I had a 944 Turbo back then, and it was true: I ruined more than one Corvette owner's day ...

I also should mention that this was actually the first commercial that showed a car moving aggressively at an offset angle: it caused quite a sensation back then. It also opened the floodgates to all the other car commercials that wore that concept ragged.

I still have this commercial on a Beta tape. LOL

Serge,

I actually received many compliments when I said goodbye on the ZO6 forum. I'd expected to get flamed after posting a picture of my new 991, but I was pleasantly surprised to read all the positive posts. Sure, there were a few meatballs, but other members chimed right in with statements such as: "fit and finish" ... "there are different types of power" "I eventually hope to get a Porsche myself ..."

I absolutely love that new C7. I can't seem to buy a base model... I am perfectly content on waiting for the more potent Z06 (have no desire for ZR-1 trim).

First Corvette the wife ever really liked (she never let me look at them, before - I had to keep borrowing other people's 'Vettes).

But, then I made a mistake and showed her the new Alfa Romeo... I screwed myself. She agreed to a red 4C. So now we play the waiting game. If Alfa doesn't really make a splash here in the states, I really think the C7Z is on the list of potential next cars (as of June 2015).

Far be it from me to bash Corvettes and their owners. It is more exciting than anything I drove during the first 40 years of my life! The nicer the car, the more jealousy it inspires and there are certainly a bunch of Porsche snobs (not the enthusiasts we have on this forum) who can make matters worse.
The more genuine petrolheads, the better, whatever the car

Very nice looking car. Saw it at NY auto show. It has a large following. I recall that Chevy allowed owners to drive them off the production line once upon a time. Wonder if they still do.

This constant comparison boggles the mind - I just don't see them as competitors in ANY category. And that is not saying one is better than the other.

The 911 has been a feat of engineering in the automotive world since its birth.
The engine being so far back (almost behind the rear wheels) simply defies logic and physics in terms of handling, performance etc.
The Vette has always been a muscle car with a well documented handling "history", with an abundance of torque - The P has never been about straight line acceleration.

I'd love to see a poll of P owners that really truly considered a Vette as an alternative option and vice versa.

IMHO they serve totally different markets and rightly so..

Anyone notice the comparisons seem to only go one way? These cars are nowhere near being in the same league to be compared to each other. Each car also appeals to a very different demographic. Trying to compare these cars is like trying to compare NASCAR to F1.

Yeah, but since Porsche in GrandAm mostly, seems everybody is having a hard time beating the Camaros which could be argued are a step below Vettes.

Just saying.
I'm Porsche biased anyway
