991 Manual
991 Manual
Im picking up my first 911 tomorrow, it will be a 7 speed manual. This will be the first car I own in the US that is Manual. I know how to drive a standard but any tips with driving the 991. Anything different that i would need to know? Every year i go to europe for a month and i own an old Mercedes in manual but i know that there will definitely be a big difference.
It's probably just me, but I find the 7 MT much more notchy than my previous butter smooth 6 MT with a short shifter.
Not to fuel the ongoing debate, but when 'The car handles the shifting, not you...a PDK is just an amazingly efficient AUTOMATIC'

Loving my manual as well. 5th. 6th, and 7th are a little different and might take a bit to get used to, specifically on a downshift from 7th to 6th and 6th to 5th. Only takes a few times to learn it properly. Once u get passed that its an amazing gear box.
Congrats on the new car! Please post pics ASAP.
PS: to other forum members: except for answering the OP's question, please do not make this thread another 'Manual vs PDK' endless discussion. It has been covered so many times already

I would only comment that the manual is an absolute darling and has become my friend like no other recent car I've had. It has true personality.
One note, the hill-hold feature may catch you by surprise as it cannot be turned off and we must learn to live with it. As someone else mentioned (and I wish I could remember who but I really appreciate the tip) - release the clutch slowly on the hill, the hill-hold will disengage as clutch engages and you can watch for it on the dash - the light will go off for hill-hold. At first I thought I had to "push" the car out of the hill-hold but this is really not the case, the car will let go if you are gentle with the clutch release. Enjoy

I've been driving BMW manuals for close to 15 years and this is my first P car MT. It's still early on the clock, but it is smooth and direct and I like it better than the tranny on my last few cars. I have had trouble from 1 -> 2 on a couple spirited launches, but that is more driver error than anything else. Now that I am used to how the car reacts, it has not happened again.
1) 1-2 is a bit rough until you get past the breakin period. I find it best to shift around 5k.
2) You will find the car smooth under 4k, but a monster above that...the car can easily overrev when really playing in the upper rev range...watch the tach and listen.
3) Ignore gears 6 and 7 unless you are.on a long highway drive.

So at this point I mostly do trust it, but it can still be a bit unnerving. Try it a few times without traffic behind you anyway. I know I stalled several times as well (thanks to auto-restart for not looking too dorky) before seeing the tips to just let off the brake and then start letting the clutch out - as in, not with the more rushed timing of a normal MT. If you rush, you catch it while the brake is still engaged and that's when it's rough or stalls!
Otherwise, I think the 7th gear overdrive is the main strange thing, but if you treat the car like a 6-speed and just do 7 on the highway - just smoothly pushing right and up when going to it from 5 or 6 - it works like you'd expect. And normally you can pretend it isn't even there.

Love love love it though overall - smooth, fun, just what I was hoping for after years of automatics. I'm sure you're going to be very happy. Oh, and congratulations!

2) totally agree!
3) This is also spot on. I rarely use 6th and don't ever use 7th. Mostly because you can't get to it when you have sport plus on.
