Why is Porsche and 911 pricing all screwed up?
Its why they're so profitable.
PORSCHE SAYS KERCHING
How rampant up-selling by dealers underpins Porsche's staggering bottom-line performance.
Porsche is famously known as the world’s most profitable car company, but recent figures released by the company show exactly how profitable: in the first three months of this year it made £13,061 for every car it sold. By contrast, BMW makes about £3,500, according to the Economist.

I have always bought a new car off the lot (except for my 1983 Honda that was in real short supply). With my 911 (like most folks on this board) I ordered exactly what I wanted and had them build it. I was willing to overpay for stuff that fit, worked well with the car and made the vehicle uniquely mine, merely because I wanted it.
So, are they overcharging? Nope. Willing buyer here.
Good for you rnl....you deserved to be able to tick all the boxes you like
I would agree and add to your rationale that.....even when highly optioned there isnt much competition dollar for dollar....Porsche makes a damn good product !

I can kind of understand why the metallic paint costs $0 on the Turbo and $710 on the S. The Turbo is a more premium car with a premium price tag. Hence, some options are probably already included into the base price of the car. It's just like the PCM. It's standard on the Turbo but not on the S. It's actually not free (rarely anything is), it's just factored into the base price of the car already.
Why why!!!!
Why is Porsche pricing all screwed up? Take these for example:
1) On the Turbo, all the Metallic colors cost 0 extra. On the S, its $710 more.
2) If you fully price out an S with similar options than the GT3, the price is pretty close, but the GT3 has a lot more HP..so why get the S unless back seats are your fancy.
3) If you fully price out an S with options already on the Turbo, (like PDK), price is lower by about 15k, but the Turbo has a lot more HP
4) Why in the S does the "Window trim in high gloss Aluminum" cost $395 when it is standard on the Cayenne, but the Cayenne cost money for the black trim which the 911 has standard.
5) Why does the front/rear park assist in the 991 S cost $990 but the park assist in the new Turbo cost $380
I bet I can find 100 more oddities...

Even more concerning is how fast the 12 and even 13 cars are appearing in the low 90's used . Both the 993 and 997 did not take the same depreciation curve and even the 996 did not drop this fast in its first year .
Comparably speaking the Gt3 is a baragain and so is the Turbo S .. if one were comparing option lists to the overall package .
I think the option which stands out the most to me is the 4K sport chrono on the base Turbo which comes standard on the "S" . That's huge !!
So you ask why ? I can only guess and speculate that specific models are price targeting a different type of shopper . The base 991 targets the entry level 911 buyer and the "S" goes for the guy who isn't looking for a pure track car (Gt3) and in most cases isnt ready to place 185K (Turbo S) on the street .
Interestingly both the Gt3 and turbo S are priced smack in between some of the competition . Above it are the Mp12-4c and 458 and priced below are the bang for the buck ZR1 and GTR . The 991S and base 991 however .. have priced themselves in limbo . At the root of the issue in my opinion are the huge list of options and tremendous disparity in cars which have the identical engine . I have seen one 991S cab speced at 119K for instance and another at 154K . That 35K difference reveals its flaws the most .. on the used car searches .

Porsche makes alot of its $ from options.

As far as some of your other pricing analogies - you can figures out derivatives easier than Porsche's pricing logic.
It used to be a lot easier:

Are you sure? I could not find PCM as an option for the base Turbo - that should mean it is included.
From what I know, its fairly simple. The marketing department's job is to find out what customers for each car/segment are willing to pay for, then package it and/or price it to maximize profit. For example, the metallic colors are more popular in sports cars and OEM's charge upto $1000 or more for it over nonmetallic colors. However, the actual cost difference between metallic and nonmetallic paint per car is less than $50 total and it goes through exactly the same process.
