Track days at Road America

All,
Sorry I have been busy and not had time to update you all with track days.
I went out with GT Track on June 10-11 and Laps inc on May 11. Both at Road America.
The May track day (Laps Inc) was in conjunction with testing our race cars. So it was a very busy day jumping from one to the other. I took the 991 in a couple of days before to have the ss brake lines installed. I am just looking for a little more solid brake feel. They noticed I had a nail in the right rear. Must replace both rears. So what would any fun loving guy do with 50% tread that he had to get rid of in the next two days? Yup. Donuts. 25 minutes of donuts and drifting my car of the remaining 50% rear tread. Drifting a 991 with PDK is damn difficult with no ability to do a clutch kick.
Laps Inc. track day on May 11th was good with some rain. Event was well run with plenty of track time and not a lot of cars jammed into each session.
Here is one lap with Harry’s Lap timer data. The car is amazing. I was running a pretty consistent 2:39 without traffic. This is in a completely stock car (except the ss brake lines). It is about as fast as I would like to go around RA without a roll cage. I left the nannies on and used them as a gauge. If I was hitting anti-lock or PSM, then I was pushing too hard. There is more speed available but I am keeping that for the race car.

Here is one in the rain. You can see me hunting all over for grip.

The June 10-11 event with GT Track Day was also a well-run event. I would recommend both.
Here is one lap with data on June 10th.
Here is full session (apologize about the crappy camera angle). I got to play a little with another 991.
Hope you enjoy. Sorry my video editing skills are not like sm_atl’s skills
Don’t forget PCA will be up there on August 16th. You can register here:

I was fiddling with a makeshift wind deflector to fix the buffeting.

I taped a triangle piece of Styrofoam to the mirror. The hope was to break up the wind coming into the car. It was about 60% effective. And 100% ugly.

Thanks for sharing the video's. It would be cool to compare a lap in your 991 with another in your race car.
Nice try on the 'anti-bufeting' styrofoam. I plan on experimenting too.

...and as far as donuts go, I come from the same school and have killed a couple of used tires the night before I was going to the tire shop...

Love the tire marks. I had to sneak the photo. Nothing like returning to the scene of the crime.

The race cars are not Porsches and the lap times are way different. So hard to compare, unless there is a constant (i.e. driver).

The thing I keep in mind is this. If I am running a 2:39 on street tires and brakes, then I am making up serious speed on the straights. Whereas another car may run a similar lap time with less horsepower but better brakes, tires and cornering speed.

This is my daily drive that I cannot afford to replace it. Not to mention hurt myself in a car this fast without a cage. I have several places I run conservative at Road America in the 991. The kink, going into 5, into 1, 7 and into 12. These are places of pretty high speed. You can hear that I transition slow from throttle to brake going into 1 and 5. I overslow into the kink. And I lift early going into 12. I find it hard to get the car back to the left side of the track going into 12 at full throttle.
I am fairly confident that I could get down to a 2:37 and I know some drivers that could probably get it down to 2:35 (as is).
Hoping to get the 991 down to Road Atlanta one of these days.
Marc

Chiboy is infamous around these parts
Wow, I remember being in a 911 car with full race setup and the driver was doing 2:45s and I thought that was fast! This was in the late '90s. Pretty impressive with a stock street car.
