991 owners who previously had a 997

My current ride is an 05 C2S 6 spd and am contemplating making the switch today eg ordering, a 2014 7 spd S with the X51. The problem is, I love my car but now after owning it for 9 years and driving a 991 base model with the 7spd I think I'm ready to change. For those who have owned both, after two yrs of the new model being out and making car/purchase payments the size of house payments, are you still 100% sold? If someone were to offer you $90K plus my car with low original miles would you consider switching back? Anything you miss about the old car?? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I was going to drive the car less. My 997.2 felt like a dinosaur by comparison. But it was smaller, more intimate, noisier and less stable (front end bobbing etc..) for those reasons it felt more unusual than the 991. So it would be more of a treat to drive on a weekend. The 991 is a better vehicle by a mile and still a 911...

I was driving a '07 997.1 TT and now drive a '13 991 C4S .. I'm shocked that I actually am enjoying the C4S better

I miss the 'rawness of the drive' of my 09 997.2 compared to my 991 C2S but in terms of technological improvements the cars are chalk and cheese. Had the PSE on the 997 but on the 991 the sound is so much more throaty and intoxicating, it handles so much better also around tight corners and the interior is refreshing to sit in. GO for the upgrade!!

While it's very easy to give an answer, the emotion underlying the question is more difficult to quantify, and I mean that very respectfully so please let me try to explain. 9 years is a really, really long to be in one car - you have to know it so well, all it's strengths and all it's weaknesses. The 991 is more refined, more comfortable, faster and I believe more precise. It's also noticeably larger and while those front fenders still tell you where the front wheels go as Ferry always intended, it has a more modern creased shape - you see where I'm going with this. If you get the 991 you're going to love it, but you're not going to forget the 997. Will you want to go back? Will you have regrets? I think it's probably going to be like saying goodbye to a very special girlfriend, for which it's pretty normal to always wish you could visit her one more time, but for all the reasons above, I'm much happier in the 991.

As an aside, my best friend just bought a 1989 911 with 49K miles. It's awesome, raw and visceral. Which car do I want to drive hard? Both. Which car would I want to drive 200 miles in? The 991. This is the Porsche dilemma - every series is a leap forward, but that doesn't mean you won't miss your old girlfriend every once in a while, if you know what I mean, but in the long run, comfort, precision and speed fuel the passion that drives us all.

Good luck and don't be hard on yourself whatever you decide- it's a great problem to have!

My general rule is -- When in doubt I do NOT buy the car .
You do still have a car that you love PLUS you have the savings . That's not a bad thing. Maybe its not time .. yet.

I've owned a 997 C4, 997 TT, 997.2 4S, and 997.2 GT3. For me the 991 2S that I currently have is probably the most versatile 911 ever and for me, the best one yet. Yes it's a different drive and some would say its a lot tamer than it's predecessors but IMO it's benefits are a whole lot more than what it may have lost. Whether its worth the move for you? Only you can answer that. For me its been entirely worth it. One thing about the 991 that I think is a bit more important is to do your research on the options you want. It really does make a difference to your ultimate experience of the car. In my case apart from the aesthetic choices the options that I think have made the greatest positive difference are PDCC+SPASM, Dynamic Engine Mounts that are part of Sport Chrono, and the big surprise...PDK! FYI, I traded in a 997.2 4S with PDK within 3 months of ownership because I absolutely hated that tranny. IMO, the PDK in the 991 has been transformed and is brilliant.

Sorry for the long winded response to your question.

Short answer: Yup, I'm 100% sold.

Haku, you are really quite accurate. The new PDK blows all past versions away. It's rev matching and shifts are pristine. I think I drive in manual mode more than I ever thought I would. Too much fun not to.

I have had a lot of cars that I loved. Starting with my first Porsche (1971T), Ferraris (308GTSi,Testarossa,Stradale,and others), believe it or not, a 1998 Viper GTS, a few GT'3, etc. Philosophically speaking, since life is relatively short and there are so many experiences to try to get in before you go, changing out of a loved car into another great car is the thing to do. You will notice a definite difference with the 991. It will have many wonderful things that will make it special over your 997. That doesn't mean you will forget the 997. Also, just remember that the 991 will also not be forever. There will always be something else coming down the pike that will stir the juices. Just my .02.

I went from 997.2 to 991 and it is a big improvement in handling. However, the doors are now flimsy. They don't have the same German thunk to them.. I often find that I am slamming door.

Wow!

I feel exactly the opposite. In fact the solid door closing when I did it the first time in the show room was part of the reason I moved from a 997.1 to the 991 after just 8 months of ownership of the 997.

My 997 (Cab) door at least was quite noisy when closing.

Wow. Great responses. Thanks to all. Two thoughts come to mind. Maybe I better test drive the PDK as I was sure I wanted manual. The second is what about keeping mine and getting a new one. Is there any reason to have a 997 and a 991 at the same time?

I almost did this . In fact I did own a 997.2 PDK and a 997tt at the same time . It was silly to do it . The two cars despite being very different are similar enough to feel somewhat repetitious . I found my compromise keeping my 997 Turbo and buying a Boxster S . Having a Turbo coupe is not in any way similar to a mid engine roadster .

It's my opinion that the 991 has to be so good that one would want to sell the 997S . It's my opinion that it is . The 991S on the other hand was not impressive enough to sell a modified Turbo . In fact the 991 used car prices seem to reflect a huge drop for the short term owner so it's my opinion that unless one doesn't care about losing 35 -40K in 15 months he better keep the car .

You also raise the question of the price . At first I felt that a 20 percent price increase over a 997 was huge . In fact a stock 991S costs nearly as much as my 07 Turbo did in 07 . However I do feel that the 997 cars needed new wheels , suspension upgrades , and a lot of extra expense whereas the 991 comes beautifully equipped bone stock . It does change my perspective about the price increase a bit .

One concern I have is about the technology . Many (including myself) discuss how the PDK greatly improved over the 997. In fact i sold my PDK 997 on the same day i test drove a 991. I feel that PDK and other high tech components tend to evolve much more rapidly than a cars design or engine . I speculate that might effect resale . No one will want the car with the dated gadgets even if the body style and engine are close .
At 115-135K the downside resale risk might be higher than in the past.

Consider everything , drive the car , and good luck in whatever choice you make.
