Pictures of things I learned about the 911 while changing oil

My ramps worked, but just barely.

The drain plug is pretty far to the front so changing the oil on ramps will actually help drain a bit more oil.

Found where the sound symposer goes from the engine to the rear deck. It's under the driver's side fan.

There are all sorts of things that cause that burning smell after a drive. The exhausts seem to have some sort of yellowish coating on them in addition to some paper labels and a tarry substance on them.

You can check the condition of the drive belt, but changing it might be a challenge.

The oxygen sensors are fairly easy to get to when they need replacement.

The actuators for the sport exhaust look fairly complicated.

This looks like the oil level sender. Probably much cheaper to buy at the VW dealership!

The oil change itself was fairly easy. The oil filter access is a bit tight and I recommend you put a rag around the rearmost area of the cannister to keep oil from dripping down as you remove the old filter.

Not sure how much oil I got out. I refilled with 8 quarts and am still unable to get an oil level reading. I think I have to drive 20 miles before I can get a reading. I'll update when I do.

So I finally was able to get an oil level this morning. The level was just shy of halfway up the normal zone, so I added 1/2 quart more, and now It's just above the halfway mark. So far I have added 8.5 quarts and I could probably get another half quart in, so I think I drained almost 9 quarts.

Same thing happened to me this time. This time I jacked the car up on the right side rear. Since the drain plug was on the left rear I let it drain this way. I also let it drain for an hour.
It took 8 and a half quarts to get it full. Last time it only took 7.6. It says in the book that new engine takes 10 L. So there is over 2L that normally doesn't doesn't drain out. I wish I had a dip stick.

I used a lift. Raised the car 6 feet. Opened the drain. Sat down in the garage and had lunch with a good friend (a drag racer and old time mechanic who prefers to repair as oppose to replace) After about 30 minutes replaced the drain plug.

It takes time to drain

Yeah I did he same thing when I changed my oil on my Cayman S, backed it up on ramps.
Looks like the 991 you could almost drain without jacking up the car. I had looked at the oil filter in my 991 as well, does look a little tight in there, but again easier than the Cayman for sure. Haven't changed it yet, just got to 3k miles, but almost winter here in Ma. so will be changing it soon.

thx for the pic, they were great.

Great shots and information. I agree, that belt does look a job to do when it needs to be replaced.
