Back story- Stuck in traffic for some time. No overheating indication. Temp gauge normal. Performance normal. Oil was checked prior to the drive, yes, proper oil level, the same after the drive. The oil light and message as shown in the pic comes on, sometimes flickering. the lights go off with acceleration ( raised RPMS) Tested the same in neutral. Lights and indicator go off with more RPM's. Park the vehicle for a while, 15 minutes.... start it , no lights. run the vehicle short drive...no lights. Take longer drive, light comes on at traffic light stops, goes off when acceleration begins. Drove the car this past weekend for a couple of short trips, no lights. Wonder if any other DB 9 or V-12 owner has experiences the same? 2007 DB9 w/ 40,000 miles owned 14 years. Mobile1 - 0-40 was in the car. Changed the oil & filter this past week. Same issues. Weather in FL is in the upper 80'd low 90's. Thanks for any ideas or solutions.
I had a similar experience in my 2012 V12 Vantage. In brief, I’d driven to Austria shortly after a service with no problems, stopped a warm engine on a moderate uphill slope to refuel. On restarting, I got a ‘low oil level: add 1 litre’ message on the dashboard. I put a litre in, the message went away so I carried on. I wondered if being on an uphill slope caused the issue. Alternatively, a combination of a warm engine (so, not all of the oil was in the sump) and a low volume of engine oil to start with made the sensor think that there wasn’t enough oil. (This is plausible, as I’ve had no issues and no oil leaks or oil usage since).
However, at subsequent short stops on the same trip when the engine was warm (all refuelling, but I think that’s a coincidence), I got a ‘oil level sensor fault’ message on the dashboard, which also went away after leaving the engine off for a few minutes. The warning hasn’t returned, but I haven’t restarted a warm engine since.
So, my current hypothesis is that I need to change the oil level sensor, which I’ll do at the next service. If anyone else has had a similar experience and has found the cause, I’d (also) be interested to know.
Very strange as earlier cars don't have an oil level sensor, only oil pressure sender on the RH rear cylinder head. I'd start with inspecting the wire to that sensor. Or replacement of the sensor. It's a common Ford part $20 or less but difficult to get to and change it.
Thanks for the feedback-
Based on what I've been able to determine so far; It's likely the oil pressure sensor (or connection to it) shown in the first 2 pics gone bad. It's NOT located in a access friendly location for sure. I'm happy to hear any ideas on access! The last pic is of the "oil Level indicator/sensor" which I have nearly ruled out due to the RPM's of the engine affecting the dash warning light the way it has and J doubleU's comment. There has been no change in the performance, no overheating, no noises and a clean oil & filter change 50 miles ago. A friend borrowed my scanner so Ill look for codes when I get it back. The light only flickers on and the message appears at a stop sign/light after the engine has been running 30 Minutes or more. Now to source the part locally that's $8.52 in the UK (with $45 shipping) and figure out access.
Correction, V12 pressure sensor is on the rear of the RH cylinder head. V8 is located on the oil filter housing. It's the single wire on the outside. 2 wire is oil temp.
For some reason the picture turned to the right when uploaded.
Looks like you are stuck trying to get down between the firewall and the motor to remove it. It doesn't look down too low so hopefully you can get a wrench or vicegrips on it. Maybe a really deep socket.
You may want to verify oil pressure via a mechanical gauge. I don't know if there's somewhere else you can temporarily screw in a gauge.
Lots of fun working back there... That sensor is a standard Ford/Motorcraft Oil Pressure sensor available anywhere. Good luck replacing it. I never found an easy place to put a oil pressure sensor except off that back of the opposite head. Which is just as hard to get to!
Bet that was fun…well done..hope that’s the issue…
No fun yet. Mine is still in the car. I don't plan to remove the "L" fitting from the head like in the prior pic. Just the sensor with the plastic connector. The sensor appears to be the issue as it shows a drip/leak. Still figuring the best way access it to remove AND replace it. Here are a couple of pics by way of a 4 post lift.
