new engine

I had the car in briefly for a service, but we found a noise that shouldn't have been there. After a little investigation, evidence was discovered of a possible engine failure (or something to that effect) about to occur. Porsche AG agreed, and in two weeks a new engine will be on the car. Apparently it's a drop-in transplant complete engine being delivered. Wild stuff. My dealer (who I love, and service advisor is great) says Porsche prefers to investigate the engine themselves. Good thing I didn't have any warranty-affecting engine mods. Anyway, it's in good hands and I'll just miss her for a few weeks. She's the best snow car I have with those Michelin Alpins on.

Interesting. I assume you didn't have any issues or complaints prior to the discovery. Did they make the determination simply based on engine noise or did it throw some codes? Good to hear they're taking care of you.

What was the noise?
Was the engine behaving differently?

Yup, Porsche is handling everything, no complaints and I appreciate their decision. Nothing was strange or amiss prior to the discovery, and we are all pretty surprised. Porsche is really taking care of this and my dealer too, good on them. I look forward to having her home in a few weeks.

That seems to be Porsches MO. Rather than spending time and money trying to figure it out at the dealership level it seems they would rather replace and investigate after. I would be interested in their findings.

And....you have to redo the 2000 mile break-in.

(Not really....just wait until oil is at temp to floor it)

Good deal Nicoli. What kind of loaner they gave you??

I always wonder about the noises / gremlins coming out of engine. Being first time Porsche 911 owner, I have been assuming that it's business as usual.

One of these days, I'm going to the dealership and driving a couple of C4Ss to make sure mine isn't unique.

As much as I hate taking the car in for any kind of service, maybe it's not such a bad idea to have a check-up every now and then.

Ugh! That sucks. I know how you feel. At least it happened during the warranty period. Keep us informed.

Just a normal S, Snowczar..thanks guys. Really, I think Porsche is just being extra cool and taking care of me, the customer, before taking time for a good, thorough forensic examination of the engine to determine exactly why something maybe is the way it is, you know?

Anyway, something like that. I don't really know, they are just handling it..very good service advisor. It's in good hands.

Glad to hear Porsche is stepping up.

I'd be surprised though if they ever disclose the exact nature of the problem, unless of course it ends up being a recall or campaign issue.
