Are Porsches really "exotics?"
911, exotic? I go with others who feel it depends where.
Personally, I don't regard it as an exotic or an insane head turner and that's why I like it. The 911 lies in a strange no mans land in which few cars exist. That's what is so appealing to so many.

I would say that the 959, Carrera GT, GT2 RS, GT1 and 918 fall into the exotic category. Having said that, there is a hierarchy. I would imagine the Bugattis, Pagonis, Konneseggs, McLaren F1 would occupy the top tier. A 550 Marranelo or 308 GTB would probably end up in the back lot.
I was reading this article written by a guy who had interviewed valets (mostly So. Cal). He asked them what they thought of the cars they parked and where they parked them (in front, back of the pack, etc.)
The consensus seemed to be that that most Porsches were not considered exotics and unless they were really special (918, GT3, Turbo S, etc. ), most of the time they would park these cars as they did with most others unless the owner tipped them to leave the car upfront. Their list of exotics included
Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley, and Rolls.
So what do you guys think? Are most Porsches exotics? Now I would imagine the 918, 959, Carrera GT would be considered by most of us as really exotics. But a 991C2s or C4s? I would have to admit that I would not consider them exotics.

I would not consider my car an exotic. Also would not consider a Ferrari 360/F430/458 or Gallardo exotics. So what are true exotics? How about the Porsche 918 and the GT, the Radical SR8LM, Gumpert Apollo Sport, Donkervoort D8 RS, Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, McLaren MP4-12C, La Ferrari, Ferrari Enzo, and so on. A high-priced tag or faux exclusivity (I mean how exclusive is a vehicle sold on eBay Motors?) does not make an exotic. I would argue that raw performance and talented, innovative engineering make a true exotic. That's just my two cents.
However, I would consider my car a true sports car and the benchmark for all the sports cars that are not exotic. The marketing departments of those manufacturers must think so, too. They spend lots of time comparing themselves to the 991. Just sayin'.

i think it depends on two factors
the location and the the car build
in my opinion, even a Ferrari 458, a California or a Lambo Gallardo are not exotic in places like Miami or Monte Carlo,
second factor is the build, compare two builds:
1. base White Carrera with beige interior, base rims and very basic options
2. a build like this:

highly optioned 991 with PTS fashion grey exterior and maybe LTS two tone red/black interior will definitely look more 'exotic'
i am not underestimating base 911, i love the simplicity of the 911, more options will not make you happier, driving the car will. But it will make it slightly more 'exotic' or lets say more of an eye-catcher

To the cognoscente, yes the 4.0 is exotic. To the non-believers, it's just another "tarted-up" 911 of indeterminate year. With 6+ Porsche dealers within a one hour drive, where I live 991s are very common.
OK, here's one: why isn't the GTR an exotic car? It is a supercar. There's probably 100 911's for every GTR that I've seen. BTW, I've seen far more Ferraris, Lambos, Bentleys etc than I have R8s. Is the R8 an exotic car?
All depends on one's frame of reference.
