Smile Engineering expertise is why I love Porsche

Just a thread to talk about why exactly I (we) love this brand. For me it's all about the engineering and design. I LOVE well made things. Apple, Omega, Breitling, BMW to name a few. These are all companies that pride themselves on excellence in engineering and brilliant design. Right? I think this is why I'm drawn to Porsche. You have both camps working harmony here. Gorgeous design and brilliant engineering. Together it's unstoppable. There are many companies with these disaplines but for sports cars normal people can buy, Porsche is about it.

I'd love to here your thoughts about this. I know many of you have expensive watches, awesome homes, the best of the best. I'm curious if you've ever really thought about why you're drawn to these things? You know, other than you can afford it.

Comments?

Thanks
Alec

the refinement and feel of every buttons, the clicks of signal lever...the composed and confidence at speed/bump and corners...

it exceeded all my expectations...

The Rolex on my arm tells time nearly as well as a quartz Seiko. But it is just such a finely made piece of jewelry that I love it and it doesn't bother me a bit that it cost nearly as much as my first house.

My girl doesn't get this. She appreciates how well her BMW drives compared to a domestic or Japanese, but when I start going on about engineering and fit and finish, how a finely machined piece fits perfectly, she zones out.

"Whatever..."

Natch it is just a car, and there are compromises in every regard, for profitability or longevity or weight... but still, it really does please in nearly every way.

I was showing my neighbor how the window moves when you open the door. "Oh, big deal," he says, "my M3 does that." Yes, when the window is up and you open the door, the window drops a bit. But on the 991, when the window is down and you open the door, it moves up a half inch so that when you close the door, the window doesn't rattle. Not a big deal, but someone somewhere was thinking, and it didn't cost any extra and it makes the car just a little bit more enjoyable.

Speaking of watches, you should explore the history and majesty of Saxony watchmaking in the town of Glassutte. Specifically the firm of A. Lange & Sohne. There's definitively a common theme of engineering excellence throughout Germany.

"For me it's all about the engineering and design. I LOVE well made things"...........ask those with convertible tops with shiny markings and creases in the tops where they fold to see if they agree with you.

Alec,

I agree but then again you are my Agate Brother

I call it "mechanical smoothness". Shifting up/down, braking, engine sounds, steering, handling, ride compliance, and add to that an interior devoid of turbulence with the top down.

I still like the electronics in a BMW better but will see how I cope over time.

OP, well said. I agree and I second these 3: Omega, BMW, Porsche (notice my Usename). I do have an iPhone and although I like it's build and it is very user friendly I still think it is lacking (though their app store is tremendous). I can't use Apple laptops for the work I do and don't care much for them as a personal solution. I also think their email interface is lacking compared to Blackberry (I find it a shame that they were not able to bounce back). There are plenty of other brands/companies that I feel combine their engineering and designs very well and will be interested to see what others say.

The 991 delights four out of the five senses.

My latest amazement at the engineering was a little thing. I was driving on a rural interstate in moderate rain. I was going about 80 and noticed that no water landed on the back window of my cab. None. The aerodynamics obviously push the water elsewhere. I thought it was really cool.

I am in agreement. The engineering on Porsches is nothing short of brilliant and the design is quite visceral and eye appealing. For years, i was an admirer who shied away from ownership because of suspicious notions regarding reliability. It was the Panamera that finally lured me in...I cannot say enough good things about that car. Since then, I've been drawn in further by these amazingly driveable and fun vehicles and now have my 991 C4 in addition to my P4S. I love looking at them almost as much as driving them. These cars put a smile on my face whenever I get behind the wheel.
