991 vs 997
Just what you like and preference.
Currently owning a 991 and never have owned a 997, I would never buy a 997.
I much prefer the style, interior and size of the 991. To me the 997 seems too small. Different perspective I suppose.

All depends on which 997 you're comparing a 991 to...
Personally I'd have a hard time buying a 991S over a 997 GT3 (for much less money). I prefer raw and visceral to plush. Any 991 owners unwilling to walk away from their 991 if offered the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 below?

All that being said, I just came back from a midnight drive in the canyons...what an amazing car the 991. Fast, precise, amazing sounds, amazing handling. The LED/PDLS lights light up the roads and you can see them working. What a joy to drive. Unless you're getting a 997.2 GT3 variant, the 991 is the way to go!

I got the last 991 C2 on the lot for a really good price. The remaining C2S were loaded and about $20,000 above my budget. As far as brakes are concerned, the ones on my C2 are more than adequate. No red calipers but the black ones look good, to me, with my 20" Turbo wheels. So if money isn't an object go with the C2S but if it is you won't be disappointed with the C2. Good luck with your decision.
mto, I had a 997 for a year before trading and comparing size with the 991 I cannot really tell a difference in day to day driving. The 991 feels even more nimble and maneuverable to me, has never felt too big. In fact it feels deceptively small until I see it next to other cars and realize it is not a small car.

It's funny when you're in the 991 driving it doesn't feel like you're in such a small car due to the interior styling.
It's only when you look around at the other cars on the road do you realize it. Same for when you get out of the car too. That first leg out the door, I'm always thinking this is a true sports car.
Looking at it from the outside it doesn't look big.
I wasn't looking for a Mazda Miata sized car. Same for that small BMW roadster Z4 or whatever.

The difference between a 997.1 C2S manual and a 991 C2 manual are not huge in terms of driving experience. I liked the slightly more obvious exhaust noise on the 991 but didn't like the manual box in terms of throw in comparison. Although hill hold was a feature I wish my 911 had. Cabin in the 991 felt much nicer as well. So while I preferred the looks and fact the 911 was newer I was pretty happy to stay where I was. There certainly was no performance difference I could real feel going off the seat of my pants feel. So I was happy to continue this way until I saw a 2012 991 C2s PDK come up at the local Porsche dealer. The wife was already grumbling about not liking to drive the 997 as she found the manual painful to drive in any type of traffic. I had only gone several miles before I knew I was going to be selling my 997. The comfort when you were in traffic was great yet the moment the road opened up the performance was at another level it was the consummate all rounder. I took the car home and immediately got the wife to have a go and she loved it as well. I sold my 997 this weekend and I will miss it greatly it is a fantastic car. The idea of a weekend car however didn't really work out for me as it meant I didn't use it as much I wished. The aim now is to search for a 991 C2S/C4S PDk coupe to replace it as I really did feel Porsche had moved the game on nicely.

In terms of PDK the 991 is a definitely improvement--a leap actually. Unfortunately Porsche never saw fit to upgrade the PDK for the 997 which they easily could have. The rest of the car has good points and not so good points in respect to the 997. In the end I still prefer the 997 as it's more akin to what has always been the 911 (simple/capable and less about gadgets), but if requiring PDK the 991 is the clear choice.
