991 C2S Suspension Overview

For your enjoyment, we've put together a suspension overview for the 2014 991 C2S. We've compared and contrasted the suspension to 997 and here's what we found.

http://www.elephantracing.com/tool-b...n-overview.htm

For GT3 comparison, check out our 991 GT3 suspension overview we've posted few months ago.

Enjoy.

Great stuff.

Any suggestions for those of us that use our cars for both weekend DEs and street use? Which pieces might help us out on track while preserving the OEM levels of NVH???

Thanks.

Question......PASM v SPASM:

What are the differences - spring height only?

Thanks guys,

Performance wise, removing rubber bushings and replacing them with spherical bearings will improve the suspension response. Rubber deforms under stress causing misalignment. Under heaving cornering the toe and camber can wonder. This problem is amplified on the track if using sticky tires.

Spherical bearings do not deform, keeping the suspension geometry and alignment true even at heavy cornering.

Whenever anything is modified, there are tradeoffs and compromises. The spherical bearings will add noise, but we have not experienced harshness. However even with a full set of spherical bearings in every position does not add that much noise, the road noise is similar to what we experience in the GT3.

Stiffer spring rates or lowered cars with limited range of damper travel will contribute to harshness much more than solid bushings will.

Check out our bearings page.

There's also a question of adjustability. The 991 has a limited range of camber and caster adjustment. We've maxed out the front at about -1.8 degree camber and the rear at -2.6. This might be limiting at the track. Caster is not adjustable at all. We do make eccentric spherical bearings or replacement control arms that will extend the adjustment range.

But that being said, even with the rubber bushings in place. The 991 is a very capable car, on street and track.

With SPASM, the springs are shorter and stiffer. They are matched with stiffer roll bars. The ride and roll behavior feel more buttoned down, but the suspension (even with 20s) is still quite supple and not at all harsh.

Thank you... wasn't sure.

I have SPASM & can't imagine a better street/DE set-up for looks
& handling in the 991 @ $900 option cost.

Had many prior vehicles w/Eibachs & H&R.

Totally agree. I wouldn't get a 911 without the sport suspension box checked. In fact I never feel the ride is stiff when cruising even when on the sport suspension setting.

Great report ! So after spending the time under the 991 I wonder if it's noticeable to the Elephant team how the additional 2" affects the engine mount and therefore the offset for the new rear suspension. The overall 3.9" increase was suppose to increase the interior but also moved the rear axle back toward the tail.

Is there an image comparing the two ?
