Funny! The frenzy is just about to start.
This frequent product cycle is getting crazy. Things are definitely moving quicker now with all the competition, but at what point does it become self defeating?
Maybe it's good for the secondary used market buyers, because seeing 30-40K off sticker for used cars a couple years old with under 10K or 5K miles isn't uncommon. The depreciation seems like it's getting worse. It's hitting the "always new" buyers pretty hard right where it counts.

I'm putting my old, washed up, out of style 991.1 up for sale immediately. I feel so yesterday.

The funny thing these small things only appeal to a very very narrow segment. To learn about all the variations of the 911 and all the options, you pretty much have to make it a part time job! It's not easy knowing all your stuff about the 911.
If they do call it a 992 that will be a joke. Might be a rumor for now. Highly doubt there will be enough changes to warrant that other than marketing like mentioned before.
Porsche has made it pretty difficult for a new guy to come in and not be overwhelmed! The customization is awesome, but to a non-enthusiast it's like going back to college.

Who knows? Until officially announced, speculation for now. The GTS part of it is very likely.

Not really 'new' interior. Just different coloured trim panels. More black. Less grey. Same shape.

From Wikipedia:
The 997 was revised in 2008 for the 2009 model year. The updated Porsche 911 (called 997 Gen II or 997.2 internally at Porsche) included following changes:
- A new engine for the S is mounted 0.4 inch lower in the tail section
- A revised suspension
- A revised front bumper with larger air intakes
- Headlamps with newly optional dual HID projectors, a new LED taillamp shape, and LED turnsignals
- New direct injection engines with redesigned Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE)
- Redesigned PCM system with optional touch-screen hard-drive navigation
- Tiptronic S option was replaced by PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

As somebody said I think is all about marketing.
As for depreciation is "normal". Is all about volume. The more cars you produce , more on the used market and less they keep the value. 993 to 996 and then 997 and 991. I do not know the numbers but I bet they went from probably XXX in Canada (993) to over 4 times XXX (991) / year. Just some random numbers. There are everywhere the 991 now.
And DFI engines with better fuel efficency.
My 2008 C2S "average" fuel was 17.8l/100km.
The 2010 C2S was 14.4l/100 km .
I rember like it was yesterday.
