Malicious Code?

I logged on to 6speed today and over the weekend and a pop up advised my "flash" was out of date.....looked like Adobe, sort of...and offered to update without having to restart...

Because Flash always requires a restart I went to Adobe website and checked out the update and, it requires a restart....

Malicious code or program haunting the site?

I don't know if it came from 6 speed but I got the same thing and clicked on it because if said Adobe flash and looked like the logo. I got a virus that Webroot recognized but couldn't get rid of. I had to take it to Best Buy and get it removed.

What browser do you use?
No popups with Firefox. Has ABP, NoScript, Ghostery and Foxbleed extensions.

Somehow I think that if you get the pop-up you have the virus. Downloading seems to increase the adds on sites (but I don't have any quantitative assessment for that).

PS I have a 3200 DPI computer which Chrome was not working very well on for the past few months. The first incidence of that came right after Chrome was fixed and working properly. That may be a coincidence.

I started getting it this weekend, it's definitely a re-route from the site. I have gotten it on two different computers as well. I'm very familiar with these so I have closed the browser immediately, if you have installed it, you are definitely infected.

There is one for Java too.
I got bit by that one, and had to do a system restore.
Therefore, I have been ignoring the Adobe one.
How do we ever know if updates are legitimate anymore?

By visiting the plug-in websites directly and downloading the updates manually. Also, make sure you have an antivirus running. I'd recommend Microsoft's own Security Essentials for Windows, and Avira for Mac. Surprisingly, I've caught a couple of bugs on my Macbook.

It's amazing that the Government can't identify those that are putting these scams on the internet and block their IP address from entering the internet and then if they are in the US prosecute them. Personally I think this is a higher priority than stopping all use of marijuana.

The problem is that the malicious code probably does not originate in US and they spoof their IP addresses. All day long we get spam phone calls at the office. The caller ID shows a local number that turns out is not in service. We block the numbers and in about month they change their caller ID.

War on drugs or war on cyber criminals? Yeah I agree but it's not going to happen. Perhaps the best solution is .... Private enterprise. Internet providers need to be more aggressive in hunting down these thieves and providing an easy way for consumers to report cyber crime activity. I called Comcast to report the flash pop up and spoke with a person who "understood" my "frustration". Total waste of my time

If we can't figure out the spoofs or a way to stop them we are in trouble and we should put more resources behind it. And personally I'm not against going after people in other countries. There should be a way to provide them a cyber surprise.
