Porsche recalling 4,400 911, Boxster and Cayman models over hood latches

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/11/03/p...-latch-recall/

Porsche has issued a "precautionary" and voluntary safety recall affecting some 4,400 sports cars across the globe. Here in the United States, the recall includes 1,382 911, Boxster convertibles and Cayman coupes, all of which are from model years 2014 and 2015.

Porsche will be replacing the lock bracket for the front cargo area (the frunk) after internal testing revealed that, while the vehicles meet "strength requirements," specific parts might not meet the company's quality standards throughout the vehicle's life. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Huh. I have a 2014 991. I wonder if I'll be getting a recall notice.

Sounds fishy to me.... Unless perhaps QC teams that randomly sample parts off of the assembly line missed something and 4k cars made it off the loading docks with a part that was later found to be cheap or not up to engineering specs for material or structure. Otherwise, I don't figure why any manufacturer would be destructive or stress testing parts already out in the public -- very bad publicity.

So, wonder what event caused this to come to light?

I'm going to guess that one or two people had a problem, possibly with corrosion or something like that, that caused Porsche to do some further testing and presume that there may be a problem down the road.

Only 2014 and 2015? Maybe they switched supplier of the part from earlier models?

I wonder when and if a letter will come. For the seat recall, they phoned me two weeks in advance. PCNA could be more proactive. A list of affected VINs or something like that in a press release would be appreciated. Love my 991 but.....
