Looking for some Purchase Info/Advice 986/987
So my current vehicle('93 Ranger) is slowly approaching it's retirement/demise; And I am looking for a vehicle to replace it. Something fairly fast and comfortable, and with some cool factor. I think that the Porsche Cayman and Boxster (986 or 987) fit that bill but I have little to no experience with them and am looking for some guidance. I'm looking in the used market, trying to spend between 15k-30k on something with less than 50k miles.
Questions:
1. What kind of reliability do the 986 and 987 have? Is there a big difference between the 2? This will be my daily driver and I will need to get to work. Also, how pricey is it to get stuff fixed?
2. Primary differences between boxster 986 and 987?
3. Primary differences between cayman and boxster apart from convertability?
4. General info, or source for general info on the 3 vehicles?
Thanks in advance,
Jak

Hi Jak,
I'm no expert but I was in a similar situation. My husband has a 997 and the last clutch job he had (pressure plate) ran around 3 grand and it was not under warranty. I bought a 987.2 Boxster under a CPO warranty which I have until mid-2017. I've had the car a year now and oil changes run me around $100. So, no $19.95 deals there. The car takes like 9 quarts of oil, synthetic. I got the car for a song because the leasee who owned it prior had a little dog that basically chewed up the parking brake, the door panels, the gear shift and a part of the steering wheel. I replaced the door panels from a Cayman, the parking brake also from a Cayman and I replaced the ugly boxster spoiler with a cayman spoiler. I plan to replace the gear shift later this year. So, you're probably wondering why I just didn't buy a Cayman. I wanted a convertible. Seems a lot of the parts are interchangeable between the 2. Anyway, as you probably know, it's not the cheapest car to maintain unless you are a whiz with cars and have the equipment to work on them. So, if I were in your shoes, I'd see if I could find one under CPO warranty. That way, you're not getting repair bill surprises. Just my 2 cents.
