What is this "alcantata" you keep referring to?

You are correct that Alcantara is a synthetic material, but not sure I would classify it as cloth. It is very similar to suede, and looks and feels more like suede then cloth. It is composed primarily of 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane.

I am assuming when you say Alcantata, you are referring to Alcantara, but maybe not. I am just not familiar with Alcantata, and do not think I have ever seen Porsche reference that product.

Spelling mistake. I meant Alcantara. But yes it's marketed as a suede alternative same as MB tex , bmw leatherette and other fancy names of vinyl are used as better alternatives to leather due to better wear and tear properties.

Alcantara is nothing like MB Tex, BMW Leatherette, and other "fancy names for vinyl." Certainly, to each his own. Alcantara gives the GTS a more sporting/racing character, which is what Porsche is trying to do with the GTS. Leather does have a more luxury car feel and look to it. Either one is nice, but if I was getting Alcantara in a GTS, I would most certainly pay up and get the GTS Interior Communication Package. It totally transforms the interior and looks so much better than the standard GTS interior with the cheap looking dash and door panels.

What I mean by MB tex and bmw's leatherette is that auto makers always use these fancy names instead of the original name.
For example
Alcantara is Italian name for special fancy suede feeling cloth.

MB Tex and bmw leatherette is a fancy name of vinyl which they use as a substitute for genuine leather and call it better and durable ,less wrinkles blah blah.

As someone who has cars with both alcantara and MB-Tex, I can say that I like both of them as I ordered them that way.

I like the look and feel of alcantara. I think it makes my GTS look more sporty than a base carrera.

And I purposely ordered MB-Tex on my wife's GL350 as our 3 kids are in it everyday, often with drinks/food/popsicles etc... It looks and feels very much like leather (maybe not the same leather that is in a S class), and it wears very well.

This is the great thing about options... we all get to choose them.
