The End
The End
Edmunds is reporting that Porsche will no longer offer a manual transmission for 911 models in the not so distant future. The next generation replacement of the 991 will be the last. Such a shame!!!

The fact that porsche is even considering dropping a manual transmission is worriesome. Yes the new engine is designed with a manual in mind, but the next one likely wont be.
A little bit shocked to know that only about 10% of buyers are MT users. I thought percentage was higher. With such a low number, it is not shocking, from a business perspective, to choose not to put any new money into MT and to get rid of it entirely.
Unbelievable.
For Porsche, it makes corporate sense. You **** off your small customer base comprised of "purists," but you increase profits and streamline production. Half of the 7MT buyers will settle (or love) PDK, and the other half will consider other cars.
I remember when all car magazines and articles were claiming that Ferrari was ditching manual transmissions. I thought it was the biggest joke; an editorial ruse that was surely to be disproved. Months later, Ferrari followed through.
I guess the 911 is next.

How could there be a business case when all Porsche's will have their heritage in Mission E? Perhaps there will be a simulated manual transmission button making the driver feel like he/she is shifting. Will go perfectly with the piped in PSE audio through the sound system.
This is the article, below. Highlights are mine to help you skimmers.
FRANKFURT, Germany — Porsche has indicated that it is unlikely to develop another manual gearbox for the 911.
Speaking at a technical presentation for the face-lifted version of the 991 series 911, Thomas Brandl, the engineer responsible for the new engine range, admitted it would be difficult to build a business case for a new manual transmission.
"As long as the gearbox exists, we will use it," Brandl told Edmunds, "but it would be very difficult to justify the investment needed to develop a new gearbox when little more than 10 percent of buyers choose it."
He conceded that these customers "continue to want the experience of driving a manual 911," but that the added sophistication of the alternative PDK gearbox provides "considerable advantages in terms of efficiency."
Given that the manual gearbox has been engineered to work with the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine, it's not quite in its death throes just yet. These engines will be carried forward into the next-generation 911, due around 2018, which should be on sale until at least 2025.
