Porsche releasing new 911 R
"ultra-strong, naturally aspirated engine, closely related to that of the GT3, and a manual gearbox, all wrapped in sheetmetal so clean and subdued"
It doesn't sound like it IS the GT3 engine, and is it just de-winged?
In which case what is the whoo-ha about if you got a NA 7speed manual C2S GTS with the powerkit?
I don't get how near 500hp with thinner tires, on a more narrow rack is a good thing. Will it have all the GT3 underpinnings with a C2 shell, that was designed for a C4?
It seems strange, imagining you just read all the features of the GT3 on the website, and then the R page would be contrary to the previous page for the sake of being a "sleeper". All the features of a GT3 without the geometry, the +10mm here, the -20mm there, the downforce of the wing, etc.
What good is all that power if you can't put it down and use it. Sounds like Porsche's paper Hellcat and not for the track, in which case it's just for bragging rights. If it were not to be a limited run that would appreciate, who would buy this - because it doesn't seem like it's for usable performance. Aesthetics, NA engine, shifter are at odds with each other
Why not just a leaner GTS with just the performance essentials, say 250 lbs less including a roll cage, less the back seats like the Europeans can spec, with your choice of spoilers, with or without. There you go sleeper or show-er.
My opinion is that the 991 C2 body is not elegant like the original 901-930 bodies because the rump is too high. The original cars without bumper restrictions look great being so low. So I don't see the allure of the C2 body whose proportions are the big distant cousin on steroids, in which case it needs the width of the C4 to make it appear lower.

Im glad you're amused
I'm not saying that 500hp is the limit for anything, I'm just saying that they've engineered the GT3 and then are cramming it under a C2 body, without all the slight nuances that make the GT3 perform as it does, for the sake of aesthetics.
Or on the other hand, is it a C2 with a big engine, without the features of a GT3.
Either way I'm just trying to understand the desire for GT3 power without GT3 performance, as may be limited by dimensions of a sleeper body.

I'm not saying that 500hp is the limit for anything, i'm quite aware of Porsche's lineup.

I love the thought of the 991R... oops I mean 911R. As a previous poster mentioned it looks like a de-winged, narrow body GT3. So how important is down force if this variant will have 500 hp? The GT3 would be the safer and faster choice on a road course, but the R is definitely the understated choice (compared to the GT3) for the road. It will certainly appreciate out of rarity alone.
think so?? LMFAO

For a driver to exploit the differences between the two would be excellent driving, but if you're not buying or lap times, it is very attractive package without the wing, intakes, etc. So why not have a "sleeper" 911 that is still incredibly capable?

I realize that everything is pure speculation at this point but I've put a deposit down and am first on the list at my dealer should they get an allocation.
As far as markup, I realize that many dealers take advantage of the economics around limited supply/high demand but NOT ALL dealers markup. Mine did not mark up on the 5 allocations of GT4's they had, nor on the RS they just sold and assured me that if they get a 911 R, they will sell at sticker. Given that there is little to no confirmed info on the R, a generalization that the markup will be more than an RS is just more speculation.
