991-2 Recall

Yesterday, I found a link on the German "Porsche Fan Forum" (PFF.de) that pointed to this Press release on the 'Porsche.com/germany' website (link: http://www.porsche.com/germany/about...many&id=423415

It states the following:
"Porsche is checking worldwide 16,429 vehicles of the models 911 Carrera as well as 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, 2,576 of which in Germany. On the affected vehicles the screws connecting the fuel collection pipes could possibly come loose. The service departments will replace the mounting bolts with optimized screws. This is merely a precautionary measure."
The last sentence sounds rather soothing, since additional sources in the German automobile press indicate, that, if these screws fail, fuel can run out over the potentially very hot engine block and constitute a fire hazard.

I immediately called Porsche USA in Atlanta, and they confirmed this. The recall reached them this past Monday, and they are presently preparing the recall letters (my car is part of the recall).
They did not have an exact date as to when the bolt replacement can start, since they are still waiting for the required parts.
On the German Porsche Fan Forum I learned that this is not a quick and simple measure; the required worktime at German shops is indicated with 6 hours.
I wonder if they need to drop the engine to get to those bolts??? Maybe someone with reliable mechanical insight can explain the potential work involved in more detail.

If anybody wants to check if this applies to their vehicle, this recall has the number: AH01

Here is a link to a file on the NHTSA website, which identifies the VIN number ranges for all affected Porsche models:

Greetings, Rainer

ChuckJ,
I heard rumors about this from German friends in early February. The very first German recall repairs started after week number 8, 2017 (end of February) due to the fact that the replacement parts were not readily available.

Not sure if the NHTSA Recall data are correct.
A check with my VIN on the NHTSA website did not show any recall and still doesn't!!
To my surprise, Porsche USA told me that my vehicle (a 2017 991.2) is listed under the AH01 recall...

Greetings, Rainer

Congratulations on your .2 Rainer!! I don't think I've seen it. Last I saw was your white .1. How do you like the .2 compared to the .1? Point me to a review if you did one and I missed it.

Thank you Chuck,

I didn't post a review, but here are the specs of my Carrera (non-S):
- Carrara White Metallic
- Two Tone Leather Interior in Graphite Blue/Chalk
- PDK (last-minute change)
- Sport Exhaust System (last-minute change too)
- Sport Chrono Package
- Electric Slide/Tilt Sunroof in Glass
- Sport Seats Plus
- Auto Dimming Mirrors
- Smoking Package (= additional 12V socket)
- Luggage Net in Passenger Footwell (why not?)
- Model Designation 911 (that's enough text)

A few comments:
- I really like the suspension and throttle response tuning in all modes, however, I drive it mostly in "Sport".
- The engine is very responsive and torquey (a big step above my previous non-turbo). The car really pulls hard when asked for it.
- Turbo-lag in "Normal" noticeable; in "Sport" and "Sport+" nearly imperceptible.
- PDK tuning better than before (virtual gears between the actual ones was a good idea)
- The stock stereo sounds considerably better than before (I am a stereophile, but in a sports car it's not a big deal for me)
- interior is really beautiful with excellent leather quality
- finally, the stock steering wheel looks adequate for a $100k+ car
- the new paddle shifters have a nice and crisp tactile feel
- I actually like the location of the Mode switch
- Sunroof with, in my opinion, vastly reduced chuffing
- Gas consumption after 2000 miles: in town slightly higher than before (about 19-20 mpg); on the road slightly lower (easily 30-32 mpg at freeway speeds)

Attached some pictures (straight from the configurator, but that's how the car exactly looks like):

Very nice configuration, Ranier!!!
Two questions:
1. What is virtual gearing?
2. Does this radio have HD? Did the one in your 991.1?

Thanks Chuck,

1. PDK with its dual wet clutches can, without abnormal wear, be coaxed into a mode where both clutches (the one for the odd gears and the one for the even gears) are slipping slightly. This creates a virtual gear between say 2nd and 3rd. In this mode the car is not coasting in third or "revving" slightly too high in second.
These virtual gears can be created between any of the 7 gears with variable ratios, thus essentially allowing an unlimited number of intermediate ratios.
It feels good because the car hangs properly on the accelerator, and as soon as you even slightly step on it, it stops slipping and downshifts for expected acceleration.

2. Yes, the stock radio has HD and Sirius. My 991.1 didn't have either without upgrade.

Best, Rainer

I had no idea it had that and I drove one! How did I miss that?

My 991.1 has the stock radio with HD and I find it quite acceptable. It is considerably better than my 2009 S.

Regards,

ChuckJ

It is subtle! I thought initially that the PDK's revised gearing for the 991.2's higher torque and lower max. RPM was the reason for it.
I think it was an article in Excellence, which mentioned this in a 2015 test of the "real" Turbo for the first time. Eventually, this technology made into all new models, including Boxster and Cayman.

All,

For all of you interested in the subject of my original post, here is a link to a NHTSA file, which states the VIN number ranges for all affected Porsche models:

Rainer:
Does this mean that if you are on the highway the transmission doesn't lock up in 7th gear and the RPM will increase slightly if you increase pressure on the accelerator lightly?

Never particularly tested that Chuck. I am pretty sure though, that the effect won't be nearly as noticeable as in the low gears due to the reduced torque at the high gear ratios.
It is not easy to find a complete and not technically "marketeerified" description of the precise inner workings of the PDK. My service guy told me that virtual gears are only used in Automatic mode and were designed to support lower RPMs and yet be responsive. Around town, I drive mainly in Sport mode and shift manually. In this mode, PDK doesn't create virtual gears and the clutches lock. But I will test it on the freeway.
